Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks have very few games that can be called automatic victories, but hosting the Memphis Grizzlies is as close as it gets.
Toni Kukoc scored 21 of his season-high 24 points in the second half and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 21 points against his former team as the Hawks remained unbeaten against the Grizzlies at home with a 95-76 victory.
The Grizzlies lost all six of their visits to Atlanta while residing in Vancouver and moving to Memphis has not reversed their fortunes.
The Grizzlies had their only lead, 6-4, less than four minutes into the game before Abdur-Rahim and Nazr Mohammed each scored four points to fuel an 11-0 run.
Abdur-Rahim scored 12 points and the Hawks made 13-of-19 shots in the first quarter. They had a 45-30 cushion with 3:36 left in the second before the Grizzlies closed the half with a 10-3 burst.
Eddie Gill, who was signed Monday for the rest of the season, opened the third quarter with a jumper to bring Memphis within 48-42. But the Hawks outscored the Grizzlies, 25-13, in the final 10 minutes of the period.
"It was a good win," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "We got off to a good start and got a little bit of a margin, even though we didn’t finish the second quarter like we wanted to. Shareef got us off to a good start in the first half and then Toni had a terrific run in the second half to maintain the margin."
Kukoc scored 10 points in the third quarter and added the first 11 of the fourth to give Atlanta its largest lead, 84-61, with 8:55 remaining.
"I feel my legs, which helps with the shot," Kukoc said. "I feel like I have a base and from that point it is all about doing the regular jump shot. When you are struggling with your legs, you don’t feel like you have a base and you feel like you have to kind of throw the ball to shoot it."
"Kukoc comes in and takes over the game for them," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said. "He can shoot the basketball, the scouting report tells you that. He did a nice job of moving without the ball. All the stuff we told them they were going to do, they did. And we just didn’t react to it."
Abdur-Rahim made 10-of-16 shots and Kukoc buried 7-of-8 as the Hawks shot 55 percent (39-of-71) en route to their third win in four games.
Jason Terry scored 11 points and Ira Newble added 10 for Atlanta, which won despite going to the line just 13 times on its home floor.
Memphis shot 41 percent (28-of-68) from the floor and attempted nearly three times as many free throws but shot a dismal 58 percent (18-of-31) from the line.
"We can’t shoot, bottom line," Lowe said. "Wide-open shots, we can’t score 80 points. It’s trickling down on the free throws, 31 attempts but only make 18. You can’t win ballgames like this. It seems like other people get open shots and they knock them down."
Shane Battier scored 20 points and fellow rookie Pau Gasol added 12 for the struggling Grizzlies, who have lost eight straight and 11 of their last 12 games.
"For this stretch that we’ve lost and been undermanned, we’ve needed to play a great game, a near-perfect game," said Battier, who made 8-of-14 shots. "We certainly can’t shoot in the low 40s and expect to win games.
"I am trying to stay as optimistic as I can. I know we have a lot of injuries and we’re young, which is a pretty lethal combination in terms of a team trying to get better. I know better days are ahead."
