Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Celtics had triple figures by the third quarter and nine players in double figures -- one shy of the NBA record -- en route to a 130-110 pasting of the Orlando Magic.

Paul Pierce scored 22 points and Rodney Rogers and Antoine Walker had 16 apiece. Vitaly Potapenko, Tony Delk and Kenny Anderson scored 13 points each, Erick Strickland and Mark Blount 12 and Walter McCarty 11.

Boston fell short of the NBA record for players in double figures set by Seattle against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 14, 1994. The explosion was Boston's biggest since a 131-98 rout of Vancouver on January 31, 1996.

"We got a lot of open looks and we knocked them down," Pierce said. "Guys played with a lot of confidence today."

No one played more than 33 minutes for Boston, which won for the third time in four contests against Orlando. The Celtics clinched their first season series with the Magic since the 1992-93 campaign.

"I hope we can score 130 points every night," Rogers said. "It just showed how dominant we are and how strong we can be with all the guys we have. We have so many weapons on this team.

"It's going to be hard for teams to really match up to us."

Tracy McGrady scored 17 points and Darrell Armstrong, Pat Garrity and Monty Williams chipped in 16 each as the Magic ended their seven-game road trip at 2-5 with their fourth straight loss.

"We played tired, we didn't execute. When Pat Garrity is missing the rim with point-blank shots, you know your guys have some problems," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers.

Boston opened with a 12-2 run paced by Pierce's six points. Pierce had eight points and Walker nine as the Celtics shot 61 percent (14-of-23) from the field and 9-of-12 from the line in the quarter, opening a 39-25 lead.

The Celtics led 64-54 at halftime. McGrady cut the deficit to 67-60 with a 3-pointer early in the third quarter, but Boston countered with a 9-0 run and led by double digits thereafter.

The Celtics took a 101-77 lead on Strickland's 3-pointer with 65 seconds left.

Boston shot 52 percent (43-of-82) from the field, including 14-of-25 from beyond the arc. In the third quarter, they hit seven 3-pointers in the third period and matched a season high with 40 points.

"I thought we passed the basketball extremely well tonight," said Boston coach Jim O'Brien, whose team had 29 assists. "We drove it well against their zone, we were very unselfish."

After McGrady sliced the deficit to seven, Pierce stroked a 3-pointer, Delk sank a free throw and Anderson converted from beyond the arc. Potapenko followed with layup for a 76-60 advantage 1:53 into the period.

Walker collected 14 rebounds and seven assists and Anderson had seven assists as the Celtics snapped a three-game home losing streak.

Troy Hudson netted 12 points and Andrew DeClercq 11 for the Magic, who shot 45 percent (36-of-80) from the floor but just 6-of-22 from 3-point range.
