Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Same old New York Knicks.

Juwan Howard scored 30 points to lead the Denver Nuggets to a 104-93 victory over the Knicks, who lost for the eighth time in 10 games.

On Tuesday, Knicks management surprisingly gave coach Don Chaney a contract extension and New York responded with a win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

But on Thursday, the Knicks hardly resembled the team that hustled on Tuesday night and reverted back to the one that has gone 12-28 since Jeff Van Gundy abruptly resigned on December 8.

New York's last lead came at 23-20 with three minutes left in the first quarter. After a jumper by Othella Harrington, Tim Hardaway hit a 3-pointer and the Nuggets scored the next eight points to take a 31-23 lead at the end of the quarter.

For most of the game, the Knicks were within six or eight points until an 11-0 run by the Nuggets in the fourth made it 88-71 with 8:43 left.

"Our offense was well balanced tonight," Howard said. "Everyone contributed. Tonight our defense was clicking and that helped us create some fast break points. We really shared the ball tonight."

"That was one of the most complete game we've had all year," Denver coach Mike Evans said. "We had 35 assists and that says a lot about how we played tonight."

Posey added 20 points for Denver, which shot 55 percent (41-of-74).

The Nuggets, a poor shooting team just like the Knicks, shot over 50 percent for just the fourth time this season as New York's defense did not put up much of a fight.

Denver began the game at 42 percent, tied for with Boston and Golden State for the worst percentage in the NBA.

The only passion the Knicks had defensively was late in the second period when Harrington gave a hard foul on Howard and a brief skirmish ensued. Both players were handed technicals.

"We were sluggish and didn't get back on defense," said a frustrated Chaney. "We can't go through the motions. We didn't execute against their zone defense. The difference was the first-half defense, we didn't even cover for each other."

Against New York's defense, the Nuggets moved the ball around with ease, dishing out a season-best 35 assists, which resulted in numerous open looks.

"We let them get into a comfort zone early," said New York forward Kurt Thomas. "They were able to build a lead. Every time we got within striking distance, they found a way to get a big rebound. We can't walk into any game and think we are going to win."

"We looked at this game and got excited and said, `This is a game we can make a step,'" said Knicks shooting guard Allan Houston. "But we didn't take advantage."

Latrell Sprewell scored 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting and Houston added 19 points for the Knicks, who shot just 42 percent (32-of-76).

Thomas, who was coming off a career night of 29 points and 20 rebounds Tuesday, collected 17 and 13.
