Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning scored six of his 18 points in a pivotal stretch of the fourth quarter as the Miami Heat posted a 93-88 triumph over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis, which was seeking consecutive wins for the first time in two months, rallied within 81-79 on a layup by Lorenzen Wright with 3:43 to go. But Mourning sank a 12-footer and a short jumper around a free throw by Grizzlies guard Jason Williams for an 85-80 lead with 2:51 left.

The teams traded misses over the next 90 seconds before Rod Strickland sealed the Heat's fifth win in six games by making seven free throws down the stretch.

"As long as we win, I don't care (about stats)," Mourning said. "If we win by 20 or we win by one, it's a win. You have to win games like this. Games like this show up at the end of the season."

"He was great," Heat coach Pat Riley added. "He was rebounding strongly and he made some plays against the zone with a lob and a jump hook inside."

Riley was quick to point out that Mourning played 31 minutes Friday and 38 on Saturday.

"Tonight was a lot of courage," Riley said. "He played with a lot of courage tonight because he was completely exhausted."

Williams had 19 points and Shane Battier 17 for the Grizzlies, who used a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter to get back in the contest.

"We got down, we fought back and got the lead but just weren't able to hold onto it," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said. "We played a good game. ... I'm proud of our guys."

Vladimir Stepania's layup with 9:33 left put the Heat on top, 75-63, with 9:33 to go. But rookie Pau Gasol had a layup 38 seconds later to ignite a 9-0 run. Gasol added a free throw before Williams and Battier -- who scored all of his points in the second half -- buried back-to-back 3-pointers.

Miami's lead down to 75-72, Mourning sank a five-footer and Kendall Gill made a basket to push the cushion to seven. But Williams drained a 12-footer and Battier sank another 3-pointer as Memphis got within 79-77.

Again, Mourning answered, this time with a short hook with 4:28 left. Wright's layup got the Grizzlies within 81-79, but Mourning was too tough down the stretch.

Miami led 24-16 after 12 minutes as Jimmy Jackson scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench. Jackson had eight more in the second quarter as the Heat took a 45-40 halftime edge. "They were playing zone and when you play zone you play spots instead of a man," Jackson said. "With our ball movement, I was able to find my space and knock down my shots."

Mourning pushed the lead to seven by opening the scoring in the second half with a pair of free throws. But Memphis went on an 11-2 run and took a 51-49 lead on a 12-footer by Wright.

Strickland capped an 8-0 spurt for Miami with a 16-footer with 6:33 left in the third quarter, and the Heat were never headed.

Mourning finished with six blocks for Miami, which used only eight players.

Memphis shot just 39 percent (35-of-89) but was able to hang close by making 7-of-14 3-point attempts.

"We had a chance to win the game," Wright said. "We have a pretty good team, we just need to set the tempo early."
