Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers had forgotten what losing is like. Apparently, they did not enjoy the feeling.

Rasheed Wallace tied a season high with 37 points as the Blazers rebounded from their first defeat in nearly a month to crush the Dallas Mavericks, 132-106, in one of the season's most stunning results.

The game was not as close as the score as the Blazers led by as many as 46 points late in the third quarter. Damon Stoudamire's jumper made it 108-62 with 1:24 left in the period.

"That was as fine a game as I've seen," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "I wish I could bottle it up and take it on the road."

The Blazers' season-high 12-game winning streak ended Saturday with a 109-106 overtime setback on Saturday at Dallas. Portland had four days to stew, then made the Mavericks pay.

"This was the greatest win ever," said Blazers guard Bonzi Wells, who added 16 points. "If you had a tape of those guys' faces, you knew the fight was knocked out of them."

Portland led 73-46 at halftime and 111-70 after the three quarters. The 132 points were a season high, surpassing a 120-82 victory over Memphis on January 24.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 19 points and Michael Finley addeed 18 for the Mavericks, whose last lead was 7-5 less than two minutes into the game.

"Not a whole lot to say," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Just an old-fashioned butt whoopin'. We were out of it early."

"We couldn't guard them," Mavs guard Steve Nash added. "We gave up 70 in the first half and it's hard to recover. We just played horrible defense. It's not that out of character for us. We have played bad defense all this year."

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Dallas, which remained one-half game behind Sacramento for the NBA's best record. But the Mavericks have experienced little success in Portland, losing 11 of their last 12 visits to the Rose City.

Derek Anderson scored 20 points for the Blazers, who shot 56 percent (50-of-90) from the field, including 13-of-27 from 3-point range.

Dallas could not stay with the Blazers, despite shooting 53 percent (40-of-76) and making all 22 of its free throws. Down 27 points at halftime, the Mavericks started the third quarter with only two starters on the court.

Portland led just 32-24 after 12 minutes but turned the game into a rout by scoring 41 points in the second period and 38 in the third.

"Things were happening so quickly," Cheeks said. "That stretch in the second quarter, I didn't even look up at the scoreboard. I just ended up being a fan."

The Blazers posted their highest point total in regulation since beating Boston, 135-109, on December 27, 1995. They used a 13-0 run late in the second quarter and opened a 73-44 lead on two free throws by Wells with 31 seconds left in the half. Portland also had spurts of 7-0 and 11-2 in the period.

"It's definitely March Madness in the NBA," Anderson said. "We had a good time. Everybody was sharing the ball."

Portland improved to 13-2 since the All-Star break and has climbed within one-half game of fifth-place Minnesota in the Western Conference.

"We're still not paying attention to where we are in the standings," Cheeks said. "We're just trying to get better each game. We still have a long way to go and if we continue to get better, the standings with take care of themselves."

Ruben Patterson chipped in 15 points for the Blazers and Scottie Pippen recorded a double-double with 14 and 12 rebounds.
