Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning got off to a great start. The rest of the Miami Heat made sure the Denver Nuggets never got started.

Mourning scored 20 of his 24 points in the decisive first half and the Heat had a terrific defensive effort in beating the Nuggets for the 13th straight time, 101-76.

Mourning bounced back from a sub-par game in New Jersey on Friday that included an ejection. He made 6-of-8 shots and attacked the basket against the Nuggets' inexperienced big men, sinking 12-of-14 free throws.

"It was a collective effort out there," Mourning said. "We come with the right energy tonight as opposed to last night. It's amazing how well we play off of back-to-backs, how much better we play off back-to-backs."

The All-Star center also blocked three shots, helping Miami hold Denver to just 35 percent (26-of-74) from the field. The Nuggets were 0-of-7 from 3-point range, marking the first time in 256 games they failed to make a shot from the arc.

"Obviously, this was a good bounce-back game for us when we needed it," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We really played hard right from the beginning. It was the absolute opposite end of the spectrum of what it was last night from an effort standpoint."

With former Heat guard Tim Hardaway serving the first of a two-game suspension for throwing a TV monitor onto the court on Friday in Orlando, the Nuggets had very poor ball movement and collected just nine assists, one better than the franchise low.

"This is a good defensive team," Denver coach Mike Evans said. "We knew it would be a tough game. This is a difficult task in itself. We have to manage the hand we're dealt. We finally get some key components back, and this happens."

Eddie Jones scored 14 points and Rod Strickland added 13 for Miami, which has won 22 of its last 30 games but remained 1 1/2 games behind Charlotte for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

"It was a big win for us," Jones said. "It was a must-win situation for us. The next couple weeks is a make-or-break time for us. We need to come out in the rest of these games with the same intensity we had tonight."

"I think this whole playoff race is going to be a bloodbath," Riley added.

Calbert Cheaney scored a season-high 20 points and Juwan Howard added 17 for the Nuggets, who also were without injured forward Antonio McDyess. Denver has not beaten Miami since January 6, 1996. Overall, it has lost four in a row.

The Heat never trailed, bolting to a 10-2 lead. Mourning scored seven points in the first quarter, helping Miami open a 24-16 advantage.

"We knew that they would come out strong, because I know Pat Riley and he is not going to stand for poor performances back-to-back," said Nuggets guard Voshon Lenard, a former member of the Heat. "We did not take for granted that they lost to New Jersey last night. We knew that they would come out strong. You saw vintage Riley tonight."

Mourning scored seven points in a 13-3 surge that closed the second quarter and gave Miami a 55-34 halftime lead. Denver never challenged in the second half as the Heat posted its biggest win of the season.

"We would rather play them with our whole team, but we had to do the best we could do with what we had," Howard said.

Jim Jackson scored 11 points and Brain Grant swept 11 rebounds for the Heat, who shot 52 percent (39-of-75) and held a 40-39 edge on the glass.

"The bottom line is we rebounded well," Mourning said. "We were able to get ourselves back on track."

Zendon Hamilton had 10 points and 11 rebounds for Denver. Chinese rookie center Mengke Bateer started and had four points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes before fouling out.
