Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Cliff Robinson was looking forward to his return to Phoenix, and it was evident from the opening tip.

Robinson scored 21 of his 28 points in the first half as the Detroit Pistons routed the Phoenix Suns, 95-82, for their fourth straight victory and 13th road win in 15 games.

After getting a warm reception during pregame introductions, Robinson scored the game's first six points and seven straight at the end of the first half as Detroit took a 51-42 halftime lead. He ended up making 12-of-19 shots.

"I told you we needed a win," Robinson said. "I was just trying to be aggressive and look for my shot. Bo (Outlaw) does a lot of roaming around on defense and I knew he'd be running back on me on rotations, and I was just trying to keep him off-balance.

Robinson spent four productive seasons with the Suns and averaged 16.3 points per game before he was traded to the Pistons last July 18 for journeymen Jud Buechler and John Wallace.

"I had four great years here and the fans have always been supportive of me," Robinson said. "I didn't expect anything different tonight."

In his first season in Detroit, Robinson has helped Jerry Stackhouse with the scoring load, averaging 14.6 points per game. The Pistons are 14-1 when Robinson scored at least 20 points.

"Robinson is one heck of a player," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "In my mind, he's one of the most underrated players that's ever played this game because of the things he can do on the court on both ends.

"Tonight he was sensational at both ends. If he hadn't gotten the fouls, I think he would have gone for 40 or 50 points. He had that kind of rhythm going."

Robinson led four Pistons in double figures as Stackhouse had 19 of his 23 points in the second half, Jon Barry finished with 14 and Corliss Williamson 13.

"We knew he was going to come out and play big," Suns guard Penny Hardaway said. "He has played a humongous role for them all season. He came out on fire. We just couldn't stop him. I guess he was coming here with the familiar rims.

Robinson also scored six of the first eight points in the second half as the Pistons took control with a 10-0 run that made it 61-42 with 7:53 left.

The Suns went nearly seven minutes without a basket from the final 1:42 of the second quarter until a layup by Bo Outlaw with 7:30 to play in the third.

The Pistons continued to pull away and built the lead to 71-47 with 2:57 left. Detroit outscored the Suns, 22-11, in the period, mostly on layups and transition baskets.

"We had two quarters at the end, the second and third quarters where we couldn't score," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "We didn't rebound in the first half. They took us out of some things that we were trying to do and then, when we decided to play defense, we got back into the game."

"It's frustrating," added point guard Stephon Marbury. "We're not playing four quarters yet as far as playing defense. If we can put four quarters together, we can at least give ourselves a chance to win."

Phoenix made things interesting, reducing the deficit to 81-71 with 4:57 to play on a layup by Milt Palacio. But Dan Majerle missed a 3-pointer on the Suns' next trip and the Pistons pushed their lead to 89-75 with 2:39 remaining.

Marbury and Hardaway each had 16 points for Phoenix, which shot 42 percent (32-of-77).

Detroit moved 3 1/2 games ahead of second-place Milwaukee in the Central Division while climbing within 2 1/2 of New Jersey for the Eastern Conference lead.
