Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Elton Brand had 30 points and 16 rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers pulled away for a 116-96 victory over the Golden State Warriors, who suffered their season-high eighth straight loss.

Los Angeles had a seven-point halftime lead and put away the game with a 12-0 run that pushed the advantage to 73-54 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Brand scored six points in the run, which saw the Warriors go nearly six minutes without a basket.

The victory was the Clippers 36th, their highest total since the 1996-97 season. Los Angeles also held a foe under 100 points for the 12th consecutive game to extend a franchise record.

But the Clippers remained 1 1/2 games behind Utah for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

"We've just got to keep winning games," Los Angeles coach Alvin Gentry said. "There's no more Knute Rockne speeches. As long as we play with the effort and play unselfishly, I'll take the result."

"Right now, I am just trying to focus internally on this team," Brand added. "Our main focus is trying to get into the playoffs. This time of year is when you have to start watching the standings. We are not trying to lose and watch the standings but win and watching the standings."

Brand made 14-of-20 shots en route to his 48th double-double of the season. He also helped shut down Danny Fortson, the Warriors' top rebounder.

"We tried to screen-and-roll like earlier in the season," Brand said. "I found myself in a lot of positions where I could score, and we stepped up our defense. If we can keep a team under 100, we have a great shot of winning."

Fortson was a non-factor after picking up two quick fouls, finishing with two points and three boards in 13 minutes.

Brand had 13 points in the third quarter as the Clippers carried a 89-73 lead into the final period.

Five Clippers reached double figures. Reserve Quentin Richardson added 19 points, while perimeter threats Eric Piatkowski and Jeff McInnis had 18 apiece as Los Angeles shot 48 percent (44-of-91).

Piatkowski made 4-of-5 3-pointers and McInnis dished out 13 assists and hit a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer.

The Warriors fell apart in the third quarter for the second straight game and have lost eight in a row for the first time since a 13-game slide at the end of last season.

In Tuesday's rout ta Seattle, Golden State was outscored, 19-8, to start the second half.

"We had a bad spell there when we couldn't make a shot," Warriors coach Brian Winters said. "Gilbert (Arenas) had a heck of a game, but it's really hard to get back into the game when you put yourself into a hole of 16 points."

Arenas poured in a career-high 32 points. One of four rookies on the Warriors, he had 25 on Monday against Washington.

Arenas made 11-of-15 shots and Antawn Jamison scored 23 points. But the rest of the Warriors shot just 41 percent (36-of-87) from the field.
