Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers put a serious dent in the Miami Heat's playoff chances while enhancing their own.

Reggie Miller scored nine points in the final minute and Ron Mercer provided a lift off the bench with 17 points in 19 minutes as the Pacers stayed in the thick of a tight Eastern Conference playoff race with a 104-94 win over the Heat.

Miller netted 20 points, including a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left that gave the Pacers a 96-87 lead. He went 7-of-7 from the line in the final 35 seconds to help Indiana (35-33) stay tied with Charlotte for the final two playoff spots.

"Miami was coming off a very good win against Philly, but it was a battle of wills and we wanted to impose ours. That's tough to do on a Pat Riley-coached team," Miller said.

In his best effort since coming to the Pacers from Chicago in February, Mercer scored 11 points in the final quarter. After Miami cut the deficit to 82-76 with eight minutes left, Mercer caught fire and singlehandedly outscored the Heat, 9-2, over the next 4:45.

"That was fun," said Mercer, who went 6-of-9 from the field and hit all five free throws. "Jamaal (Tinsley) and the guards did a good job of creating to get me the open shot. I just basically had to catch and shoot."

Alonzo Mourning and Eddie Jones each scored 20 points for the Heat (31-36), whose late playoff run may have fizzled. They are 3 1/2 games out of the final spot in the East.

Jermaine O'Neal offset Mourning's effort with 21 points and eight rebounds, outplaying his counterpart in the first quarter as the Pacers scored the last six points of the period for a 26-16 lead.

"We got on a roll and started pouring the shots in," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. "It seemed like every time we shot the ball, it went in."

Brad Miller went 5-of-5 for 11 points in the period and finished with 15 and eight rebounds. Jonathan Bender added 10 points off the bench for Indiana, which shot 54.5 percent (36-of-66) and held a huge edge at the foul line, hitting 30-of-35 while the Heat went 12-of-15.

The Pacers used a 10-0 run to take a 46-33 advantage with 4:07 left in the second quarter. Tinsley capped the burst by driving past Rod Strickland for the score, leaving Strickland and Mourning staring at each other under the basket.

"They played better than us from the beginning," Mourning said. "They got a lead to start the game and we played catch-up the rest of the way."

Indiana, which shot 65 percent (21-of-32) from the field and led 56-43 at the break, cooled off somewhat after halftime but never let the Heat get closer than six points.

"We didn't step up. They established in the first six minutes of the game a dominance, a physicality and a talent that had us chasing them all night long," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We were not alert or aware in the first seven, eight minutes of the game. They scored every time we were not thoughtful of what we were doing."

Eddie House scored 18 points off the bench on 8-of-12 shooting and Strickland finished with 14 as the Heat shot 46 percent (39-of-84) but were beaten on the boards, 38-33.

The game featured nine technical fouls, six on the Pacers and three on Miami, the last two causing Jimmy Jackson's ejection with 20 seconds left.
