Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Lakers must feel fortunate that they will not have to visit America West Arena in the playoffs.

Shawn Marion tied season highs with 32 points and 18 rebounds and Stephon Marbury added 26 and 11 assists as the Phoenix Suns dominated the fourth quarter en route to a 118-106 victory over the Lakers.

Los Angeles opened the season with seven straight wins before suffering its first loss here, 95-83, on November 16. The Lakers' return trip to America West Arena produced the same result as their All-Star duo disappeared down the stretch.

Phoenix had a 94-93 lead with 7:51 remaining before Marion dunked to spark a 22-6 run. Marion added a layup and an alley-oop dunk off a pass from Marbury, who capped the burst with a pair of free throws for a 116-101 lead with 1:40 to play.

"The guys have to step above their lines," Phoenix coach Frank Johnson said. "Shawn did it again, Stephon did it again.

Everyone stepped above their lines."

Marion scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and Shaquille O'Neal scored 10 for Los Angeles, but made only 2-of-9 free throws in the final 12 minutes. Kobe Bryant did not attempt a shot and was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

"We're concerned because we were not able to gut it out," Bryant said. "We allowed them to penetrate and pitch all night long.

(Not taking a shot in the fourth quarter) is not really a concern of mine. I feel like I can go in and score at any time."

"That was a disappointing finish," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We did just about everything possible to mess it up and not even have a chance to get back in the ballgame. We're not going to worry, why would we worry? We're like Alfred E.

Neuman."

Bryant scored 36 points and tied an NBA season high with 18 free throws. O'Neal finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks but made just 10-of-21 shots and 4-of-15 free throws.

Jake Tsakalidis had 19 points and 10 rebounds and did an excellent defensive job on the unstoppable O'Neal.

"Jake was definitely the MVP of the game," Marbury said. "He just dominated and he played extremely well against what I think is the best player in the NBA. You have to give him all the respect tonight."

"The Lakers are a big team, they've won championships, it's important for us to win this game," Tsakalidis said. "You feel good after a game like this. We have to continue to play like this."

Penny Hardaway and fellow reserve Alton Ford scored 11 points apiece for the Suns, who shot 54 percent (42-of-78) from the floor and scored their highest total of the season.

Robert Horry had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists and Derek Fisher scored 10 points for Los Angeles, which made only 24-of-37 free throws and committed 13 turnovers, leading to 21 points for Phoenix.

Horry scored the first 11 points of the game for Los Angeles, which jumped out to a 22-10 lead less than six minutes into the first quarter. But Phoenix responded with a 21-10 run, highlighted by eight points from Marbury, to pull within 32-31 with 22 seconds left in the period.

Marion scored 10 points and Phoenix made 13-of-20 shots in the second quarter to take a 62-56 halftime lead. The teams were tied twice and exchanged the lead twice in the third before the Suns carried an 85-83 edge into the final period.
