Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Toronto Raptors are getting good at these frantic finishes.

Jerome Williams hit the go-ahead layup with 6.1 seconds left and Antonio Davis blocked Toni Kukoc's potential game-winning layup as the Raptors held on for an 85-83 victory over the Atlanta Hawks to extend their winning streak to four games.

Williams was one of five Raptors in double figures with 13 points. But Williams, an agressive rebounder, felt that he had not contributed until that point.

"At the end of the game, I felt like all game, I hadn't given the team anything," Williams said. "I was just trying to keep focus and give my team something. I knew I had to go to the boards hard. Fortunately it fell in my hands and I was lucky to put it back in."

"We're playing hard and that's what's important," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "The best part about it is when we set up a play, they try and execute a play. Nobody is trying to do it by themselves. We're on the same page. Guys are responding and trying to help each other. We stayed focused and needed this win.

After Atlanta All-Star forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit a jumper with 13 seconds left, Davis went through traffic but missed badly.

Williams, who had eight rebounds, put back the miss to give the Raptors an 84-83 lead.

It was the second time this season Toronto won in Atlanta in the final seconds. On December 1, Hakeem Olajuwon hit a jumper with 1.8 seconds left, providing a 104-103 win.

The Hawks had one more chance to win, but Davis blocked Kukoc's layup attempt.

"I knew we were going to be scrambling," Davis said. "As a center, my job is to stay in the middle. I saw him coming down the lane and I knew I had to go take the shot.

It was the third consecutive game Toronto survived a exciting ending.

On Sunday against Washington, Davis stole the ball from Michael Jordan and converted the go-ahead layup with 15 seconds left.

On Wednesday against Miami, Morris Peterson converted the go-ahead layup with 8.4 seconds left.

Toronto has won four straight games since losing Vince Carter to season-ending knee surgery on Friday. The Raptors (34-38)

are two games behind eighth-place Indiana in the Eastern Conference.

The Raptors trailed 70-64 at the end of three quarters. But the Hawks missed their first nine shots of the final period, allowing the Raptors to take a 71-70 lead on a running layup by Peterson with 10:25 left.

The Raptors missed four of their next seven shots and led only 80-76 when Terry converted a three-point play with 3:05 for the Hawks' first basket of the fourth period.

On the other end, Davis missed a short jumper and the Hawks had a chance to take the lead. But they could not convert on their three possessions, with the most costly miss coming at the 1:22 mark when Abdur-Rahim had a clear path to the basket and missed an easy layup.

Williams grabbed the rebound and passed to Chris Childs, who dished to Peterson. Peterson went through traffic and extended himself for a reverse layup that made it 82-79 with 1:17 left.

After the teams traded turnovers, Terry made two foul shots with 38 seconds left to pull Atlanta within 82-81.

Abdur-Rahim led the Hawks with 23 points on 10-of-26 shooting.

But he had just six points in the fourth quarter and was frustrated all night by the officiating and the constant double-teams.

"I don't got no comments about the referees," Abdur-Rahim said.

"We play this team three times and they beat us that way all three times. It was a physical game. I missed a lot of chippies (easy layups). We should have won this game."

"It was a tough ball game to officiate, tough both ways," Terry said. "They kind of just let them play. It was a tough loss.

"They were just scrappy and tough all night. They were very resilient. We couldn't catch a break. We couldn't get a shot to fall. Tonight they were the better team."

Atlanta (29-42) clinched its third consecutive losing season and had its six-game home winning streak snapped.
