Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers' playoff aspirations likely are over.

Bryon Russell led six players in double figures with 19 points as the Utah Jazz extended their lead over the Clippers to 4 1/2 games for the final Western Conference playoff spot with a 105-92 victory at the Staples Center.

John Stockton, who just turned 40, had 16 points and 14 assists and 38-year-old Karl Malone added 16, six and six rebounds for the Jazz, who shot 55 percent (41-of-75) en route to their 13th consecutive victory over the Clippers.

"You want to finish as high as you can no matter what the seed is," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "If you don't make it, you don't get to play in the playoffs. The question is asked, `Why do we push so much with an older team?' It's because we've got so many young players that need to learn how to play. That's where you become a better player. You realize if you play hard, it isn't going to kill you."

With the Jazz trailing, 45-44, Stockton made a layup to start an 8-0 run to close the first half. Utah did not trail thereafter.

The Jazz built their advantage to 87-73 on a jumper by Malone with 9:07 left, and the Clippers got no closer than five points down the stretch.

"You don't count anybody out in this situation," Malone said.

"You have to continue to play at the level that got you here.

We got a little lazy with the basketball, we didn't make good passes. The point was we made our run at the end, and that's what matters. I don't know if this win was any more special except we are fighting them for the last playoff spot."

Michael Olowokandi netted 28 points and Elton Brand had 17 and 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who have not defeated the Jazz since March 27, 1999.

"Now we need some help, but we're going to keep fighting,"

Brand said. "We're not out until we're mathematically out.

We're not giving up."

Los Angeles led after one quarter, 29-26, and took a 33-26 advantage on a hook shot by Brand 67 seconds into the second period.

After Darius Miles sank 1-of-2 free throws to make it 36-30 with 8:28 left, Russell hit an 18-foot jumper to start a 23-9 run into halftime.

The Jazz converted 16 Los Angeles turnovers into 27 points, while the Clippers could turn 12 miscues into just 11 points.

Los Angeles has just eight games to catch the Jazz, who have played one fewer game. They meet again on Wednesday in Salt Lake City, where Los Angeles has dropped 25 straight games since April 18, 1989.

"With eight games to go, we're in a tough situation," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry admitted. "We have to fly and find a way to win the game. It doesn't matter what happens, we're not writing off our season."
