Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Portland Trail Blazers again showed why they can be one of the NBA's most exasperating teams.

The Blazers struggled for three quarters against the lowly Golden State Warriors, then collapsed in the fourth period, suffering a surprising 107-91 defeat that prevented them from clinching a playoff spot.

"This is the first time in 3 1/2 months that we haven't competed for four quarters," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "We just aren't defending right now the way we are capable of."

The Blazers allowed the Warriors to shoot 54 percent (46-of-85) from the field, while Golden State also made 10-of-20 3-pointers.

Four players scored at least 20 points for the Warriors, who broke open a close game by outscoring the Blazers 26-8 over the first nine minutes of the final quarter.

"I thought we just didn't bring enough energy in the fourth quarter and we just got caught on our heels," Portland forward Scottie Pippen said. "Teams like this (Warriors) are free balling this time of year because they are not playing for anything and the game is a little easy for them."

Jason Richardson scored 26 points, while Bob Sura tied a season high with 23 for Golden State. Gilbert Arenas contributed 22 and Antawn Jamison added 20, marking the first time the Warriors had four players with 20 or more points since January 30, 1996 against the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I'm not sure what happened tonight, but I like to see it," Golden State coach Brian Winters said. "Having four guys score over 20 points makes it easy."

"Portland is a playoff-bound team," Sura added. "To blow them out on the home court, in front of our fans, is real exciting. We'd like to finish up strong and try to build on some things for next year."

Portland opened its biggest lead, 62-54, on Damon Stoudamire's jumper with 10:59 left in the third period before Golden State closed to 78-77 enter the final quarter.

With the Blazers trailing 91-86, the Warriors ripped off 13 straight points to take a 103-86 lead on Richardson's jumper with 2:59 to play.

"I hope tonight is an indicator of how we're capable of playing," Arenas said. "If we can get this kind of scoring from different people every night, we can be a great team."

Rasheed Wallace, who returned after missing two games with a sore back, scored 20 points for the Blazers, who lost both games in Oakland this season.

"All we can do is get ready for Thursday (against New York) and we have to find our rhythm as a team again," Stoudamire said. "It looks like we lost our flow on both ends of the court tonight."

Portland has dropped three straight and four of its last five after winning 17 of 19 to improve its playoff position. One of those defeats was an ixeplicable 103-100 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on March 25, when the Blazers squandered a 25-point lead in the second half.

Portland dropped 1 1/2 games behind fifth-place Minnesota in the Western Conference.

"I just think that we need to get back to playing the defense that we are capable of," Cheeks said. "That is what helped us win the San Antonio game, so I am not concerned about our play, but doing the things that we need to get back to doing."

Bonzi Wells scored 15 points and Derek Anderson added 12 off the bench for Portland, which shot 42 percent (36-of-85). Dale Davis recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the third time in their last 19 contests.
