Game StoryMIAMI (Ticker) -- With 15 seconds left, Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning was in a zone. Too bad it was what NBA's leading shot blocker calls his "no-fly zone."
Chucky Atkins sank the go-ahead basket with 88 seconds left and Ben Wallace's block with 15 seconds remaining made it stand up as the Central Division-leading Detroit Pistons edged the Heat, 90-87.
Wallace, also the league's leading rebounder, stuffed Mourning's close-in hook shot to preserve an 88-87 lead.
It was the sixth block of the game for Wallace, who also grabbed 16 rebounds.
"Cliff (Robinson) did a great job, he made him come a little farther than he wanted to," Wallace said. "Cliff forced him to come into my air space, it's a no-fly zone."
Mourning, moving left to right across the paint, was being hounded by Cliff Robinson, who may have forced him farther through the lane than he wanted.
"I knew he was going with the hook across the middle, I just wanted to contest it," Robinson said. "And low and behold, the No. 1 stunner in the league was behind me."
"He made a good play. He made a play I usually make," Mourning said. "A man got beat, he came over to help. I got it up there, and he got way over the rim. He might be defensive player of the year, he gets my vote."
The Pistons' (45-29) third straight victory pulled them within two games of Eastern Conference-leading New Jersey and snapped a four-game losing streak in Miami.
Eddie Jones scored 20 points and Rod Strickland netted 15 for the Heat (32-41), who remained four games behind Indiana, which owns the East's final playoff spot.
Robinson finished with 13 points, including a big 3-pointer that helped the Pistons come back from a late five-point deficit.
Mourning's free throw gave the Heat an 84-79 lead with four minutes left, but Corliss Williamson nailed a five-footer and a lay-in around LaPhonso Ellis' foul shot to narrow the margin to 85-83.
Robinson drained a 3-pointer with 1:50 left for an 86-85 Pistons lead but Jones answered with two free throws before Atkins' running hook put Detroit on top to stay.
After Ellis missed an open 3-pointer, Jerry Stackhouse and Robinson each sank a free throw in the final 11 seconds to assure victory for Detroit, which shot 47 percent (34-of-72) and hit just 15-of-24 free throws.
Williamson netted 20 points and Stackhouse added 14.
Brian Grant had 12 points and nine boards and Ellis pitched in 10 points for Miami, which hit 42 percent (33-of-78) of its shots and forced 16 turnovers while committing nine.
