Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Lone Star State rivalry between the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets remains as one-sided as ever.

Tim Duncan led all five starters in double figures with 22 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds as the Spurs cruised to a 102-78 victory over the Rockets.

San Antonio completed a four-game sweep of the season series and has won 14 of the last 15 meetings with Houston.

David Robinson scored 15 points, Tony Parker and Steve Smith 13 apiece and Bruce Bowen 12 for the Spurs. Malik Brown added nine off the bench and matched a career high with 14 rebounds.

"It was good to get balanced scoring tonight," Duncan said. "We move the ball around and played well."

The Spurs shot 52 percent (39-of-72) from the field while holding the Rockets to just over 40 percent (31-of-77). They also had a 48-28 rebounding edge and a 48-34 advantage in points in the paint.

San Antonio remained 1 1/2 games behind first-place Dallas in the Midwest Division with seven to play.

"This is a good win for us," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It's always competitive when these two teams play because the guys know each other so well. We shot the ball well tonight. I'm glad we kept our heads in the game."

The Spurs showed no signs of fatigue following Wednesday's 90-88 win over Seattle, building a 55-45 halftime lead. They have won two straight following a three-game slide.

"Pop stressed for us to be focused tonight," Duncan said. "He always does that the second game of back-to-backs because we might be tired. He gave us the intensity we needed."

Cuttino Mobley scored 24 points and Steve Francis added 16 for the Rockets, who fell behind by 17 points early in the third quarter and got no closer than 10 thereafter. The final score represented San Antonio's biggest lead.

"The Spurs played great defense," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "They do a great job of protecting the basket. I think they got a chance to win it all."

"Robinson doesn't score a lot anymore but he doesn't need to," Francis added. "They (Duncan and Robinson) may not block a lot of shots but they alter a lot of shots."

The Spurs scored the first seven points of the second half, taking a 62-45 lead on Smith's 3-pointer with 9:10 left in the period.

The Rockets responded with a 14-2 spurt, closing to 64-59 on Francis' 3-pointer with 5:38 left in the third quarter. But the Spurs took control with a 12-4 run and went up, 76-63, on Danny Ferry's 3-pointer with 1:11 to go. Duncan scored six points during the key spurt.

"We had a nice comeback and then Duncan wore us down," said Tomjanovich, whose club only scored 13 points in the fourth period. "We were fighting him the whole game. He made a couple plays on loose balls and dunked it."

The Rockets got off to a fast start, jumping to an 18-10 lead on Francis' three-point play with 6:50 left in the first quarter, the Spurs answered with 12 straight points and were never headed.

"We needed these last two games because we had lost the last three," Duncan said. "We need every game at this point and we're not looking past anybody."

The Rockets have dropped eight of their last 10 games and need to win six of their final eight games to avoid their first 50-loss season since 1983-84.
