Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- As the final weeks of the season approach, the New Jersey Nets are nearing uncharted territory for their franchise.

Keith Van Horn had 20 points and a season-high 15 rebounds and Kenyon Martin scored 19 points as the Nets tied a franchise record for victories with a 110-85 rout of the Orlando Magic.

New Jersey has been among the best teams in the NBA all season, but is not a franchise that has a history of great teams. With six games remaining, this year's version of the Nets already has won 49 games, tying the franchise record set in 1982-83.

"We are not trying to sit at 49 and pat ourselves on the back," Scott said. "We still have some bigger things left before the season is over. There is still a lot left this season, a lot more important games. We know we have 49 and everyone in that locker room should be very proud, but we are looking to do a lot better than that."

One more victory will not only give New Jersey a franchise record, but also its first division title since joining the NBA in 1976.

The Nets have been dominant at Continental Airlines Arena, posting an Eastern Conference-best 32-6 home record. They extended their franchise-record home winning streak to 13 games with a thorough beating of the Magic.

New Jersey never trailed and led by as many as 12 in the first quarter but had a 31-26 edge with 8:45 left in the second quarter. But the Nets followed with a 29-12 run led by Van Horn, who scored eight points.

"Right from the start of the game, we really brought it tonight," Van Horn said. "We were extremely aggressive on both ends of the court. Usually the aggressive team wins and that is what happened tonight."

Aaron Williams scored six of his 11 points during the burst and Kerry Kittles added four, capping it with an alley-oop dunk off a pass from Van Horn for a 66-34 cushion with 69 seconds left in the first half.

New Jersey had its largest lead at 102-71 after a three-point play by rookie Richard Jefferson with 6:09 remaining.

"We are learning how to close the door and tonight we closed the door in the third quarter," Nets point guard Jason Kidd said.

Lucious Harris scored 15 points off the bench and Kidd had 14 points and 10 assists as New Jersey remained three games ahead of the Detroit Pistons for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

The Nets shot 46 percent (44-of-96) and held a 51-44 rebounding edge led by Van Horn and Todd MacCulloch, who grabbed 10 rebounds.

Tracy McGrady had 21 points and seven rebounds and Troy Hudson added 20 for Orlando, which fell 2 1/2 games behind Boston for third place in the Eastern Conference.

"Tonight was definitely a big challenge for us," McGrady said. "These guys had won 12 consecutive games at home. We were tired and just tried to fight through it. The effort was there and the thing that killed us was we didn't make shots."

The Magic only shot 38 percent (30-of-79) and committed 19 turnovers, leading to 15 points for the Nets.

"For 48 minutes this was the best defense we have played against this team since I've been here," Scott said. "Our guys came out with a mission. We did a heck of a job defending these guys."

Pat Garrity was held to just five points on 2-of-8 shooting and Mike Miller, Orlando's second-leading scorer, sat out with a sprained ankle.
