Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Chicago Bulls gave the Detroit Pistons a glimpse of the future. On Wednesday, at least, it was more than the Central Division champions could handle.
Jalen Rose scored 24 points and Tyson Chandler paced a key run over the last 6 1/2 minutes as the Bulls ended an eight-game losing streak to the playoff-bound Pistons, 102-101.
Chandler, one of Chicago's two teenage rookie 7-footers, scored eight of his career-high 21 points in a 14-3 burst that turned a seven-point deficit into a 98-94 lead. His two free throws with 6:31 left began the surge, which he ended with a basket with 95 seconds remaining.
Chicago, which has won consecutive games for the first time since a winning three in a row from February 20-23, maintained a four-point lead in the final seconds until Cliff Robinson's 3-pointer at the buzzer.
"I'm just really proud of our guys. Our guys hung in. We got down early and fought back and I thought we were just terrific," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said.
Robinson netted 27 points and rookie Zeljko Rebraca added a career-best 24 for Detroit, which had not lost to Chicago since January 22, 2000.
"I don't want to take anything away from that team, but there's no way we should be losing to them right now," Robinson said. "Especially under the circumstances, coming off a win against Atlanta to clinch the division. We have to come back and take care of business and win."
Travis Best scored 14 points and Jamal Crawford added 12 for Chicago, which shot 46 percent 40-of-86) from the floor and held a 44-35 rebounding advantage. Chandler and Trenton Hassell, who also scored nine points, each grabbed 12 boards.
"We know that they're without Ben Wallace, who's probably their MVP this year. But I just felt our guys fought their (butts) off and deserved this game," Cartwright said.
Detroit certainly did miss the NBAs leading rebounder and shot-blocker, who was out with a sprained right ankle.
After the Pistons took a 30-18 lead after the first quarter, it looked like it would be another blowout loss for the Bulls.
But Chicago, which snapped a nine-game losing streak Monday against Boston, surprisingly refused to fold. Trailing 39-35 midway through the second quarter, the Bulls went on a 10-0 run and were within 51-45 at halftime.
Detroit regained control in the third, taking a 69-54 advantage on Robinson's 3-pointer with 6:31 left. But the Bulls stormed right back with a 16-4 run. They lurked within single digits for the next 10 minutes before going on their final run.
"It was disappointing to score 101 points and get beat in your own building," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said.
Chucky Atkins collected 18 points and Jerry Stackhouse added 14, nine rebounds and eight assists for Detroit, which trails Eastern Conference-leading New Jersey by three games.
"Defense is a team game and you've got to go out there as a team," said Hassell, who covered Stackhouse. "If he scores a lot, it's against the team, so we worked together as a team tonight."
"The biggest job was done by Trenton," Cartwright said. "We know that Stackhouse is going to score, but he really made him work."
