(ADDING INFORMATION, QUOTES)

MIAMI 99, ORLANDO 94 --------------------

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Maybe Pat Riley was playing the wrong guys all season.

Eddie House scored 16 of his career-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and rookie Malik Allen added a career-high 16 as the Miami Heat posted a 99-94 victory over the Orlando Magic.

With Miami having been already eliminated from the playoffs, Riley has increased his use of reserves that did not see much action through the first 75 games.

House and Allen carried the Heat to a victory that did little but make the Magic's final three games essential if they want home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

House, who was averaging 19 minutes in 60 games, made 9-of-18 shots, including 4-of-10 3-pointers. He also added five assists and four rebounds in 32 minutes.

"This is a game where I was hitting (shots)," he said. "I've been hitting shots for the past few games. With consistent minutes, I'll be getting better."

Allen had played in just nine games this season but made 8-of-9 shots and grabbed five rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.

"I probably wasn't even on the scouting report," he said. "I definitely took (the Magic) by surprise a bit. It was a pretty intense game and it was just nice to be a part of it and contribute."

"I'm sure he surprised them," Riley said. "He's been working, he's a good shooter from medium range and he played with a lot of hustle tonight."

Orlando had a 76-74 lead with 9:55 remaining before Miami's Alonzo Mourning nailed a 17-foot jumper to tie the game and spark an 18-4 surge. House nailed a 3-pointer with 9:21 left to give the Heat the lead for good and Allen followed with a thunderous dunk.

House scored 10 points during the burst and capped it with a 3-pointer for a 92-82 cushion with 2:54 to play.

But the Magic rallied after Rod Strickland committed a flagrant foul on Darrell Armstrong, who sank the ensuing free throw and made a fast-break layup to slice the deficit to 92-88.

Troy Hudson buried a 3-pointer for the left corner to bring Orlando within four at 1:30, but House responded with 16-foot jumper. Tracy McGrady sank a jump shot for the Magic, but the Heat made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 29 seconds to put away the game.

Orlando looked sluggish after Thursday's overtime loss to New Jersey and lost for the third time in five games after a three-game winning streak. The Magic fell to 6-14 in the second of back-to-back games.

"We didn't lose the game from (fatigue)," Armstrong said. "I don't care how many games you play back-to-back, that second game you're still going to be able to win it. You just hope you can stay fresh. (The Heat) had more enrgy than we did."

McGrady had 34 points and 11 rebounds and Hudson scored 18 points off the bench for the Magic (43-36), who are just one game ahead of Philadelphia and Charlotte for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Orlando hosts Philadelphia on Sunday.

Armstrong finished with 16 points as Orlando shot just 40 percent (36-of-89) from the floor.

Eddie Jones scored 15 points and Mourning had 13, 10 rebounds and four blocks for Miami, which held a 51-45 rebounding edge and overcame 16 turnovers, which led to 19 points for Orlando.

McGrady scored 14 points in the first quarter as the Magic jumped out to a 30-20 lead. They had a 46-35 edge with 4:53 remaining in the second quarter before the Heat closed the first half on a 16-6 spurt.

"Late in the season you try to give your starters a rest, but the starters are the ones that blew the damn game," McGrady said. "We blew an 11-point lead and then we tried to play catch-up, which is difficult to do when you just played an overtime game against a great team the night before."

Allen nailed a hook shot with 1:39 left in the half and, after House made 1-of-2 free throw, had a follow shot to beat the halftime buzzer and bring Miami within 52-51.

"When they cut it to one I thought we were in trouble," Rivers said. "I really thought because of the game last night we needed a margin and to hold it. This one was difficult because I think we had a chance to put it away and we didn't. We played with fire and got burned."

The Heat trailed the entire third quarter but tied it three times in the opening minutes of the fourth before House's 3-pointer gave them their first lead since the first two minutes of the game. 12:05AM ET
