Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jason Terry showcased his game on a night in which the Atlanta Hawks had numerous heroes.

Terry scored seven of his 43 points in the second overtime and added 10 assists as the Atlanta Hawks outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers, 128-123.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim collected 36 points and 12 rebounds as Atlanta received major production from its two best players. Abdur-Rahim sealed the victory with two foul shots with 15 seconds left.

Abdur-Rahim gave Atlanta the lead for good at 122-119 with a three-point play with just under two minutes left. Terry scored a spinning layup for a five-point cushion with 1:27 remaining.

"Jason was relentless," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "He was attacking the rim and making them make a play. He didnít back off and he kept coming at them. He made a lot of big plays."

Terry assisted on a basket by Ira Newble for a 126-123 lead with 21 seconds left and Cleveland had one final chance. Atlanta forward DerMarr Johnson blocked Ricky Davis' 3-point attempt to end the Cavaliers' hopes.

Newble and Hanno Mottola had double-doubles for Atlanta, which picked up its first overtime win of the year. Newble had a career-high 17 points and 12 rebounds while Mottola added 12 and 12 for his first career double-double.

Andre Miller made two free throws with six seconds left in regulation for a 105-102 lead for Cleveland. But Terry received a jarring pick from Newble and nailed a 3-pointer with less than a second left to send the game into overtime.

"I was trying to get a handle on the ball, and make sure I was ready to do that move that I do for my pull-up threes," Terry said. "I looked up and Iraís sitting right there with a mean pick, and I just naturally crossed over and took the shot."

The loss spoiled a terrific game from Miller, who finished with 27 points and 16 assists. However, Newble helped stifle Miller in the two overtime sessions with some tough perimeter defense.

"I played him deep and shut him down and had my teammates behind me for help," Newble said. "(Defense) is one of my best attributes."

Davis also had a strong night with 19 points off the bench on 8-of-15 shooting. The 6-7 swingman never averaged more than 4.7 points in parts of three seasons with Charlotte and Miami but entered Saturday's game averaging 23.7 points over his previous 10 games.

Davis, an impending free agent this offseason, had four dunks in the fourth quarter, including one with three minutes left in regulation for a 100-94 lead. Terry had consecutive baskets and Newble made a pair of free throws for a 100-100 tie with 1:47 to go.

Terry made 16-of-34 shots, including five 3-pointers. Abdur-Rahim was 12-of-24 and converted all 10 foul shots for Atlanta, which shot 83 percent (29-of-35) at the free-throw line.

Cleveland placed all five starters in double figures as Wesley Person netted 25 points and drilled five 3-pointers. Jumaine Jones, a Georgia native and 1999 first-round selection by the Hawks, collected 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavs.

"We made a lot of mistakes at the end of the game, which has really cost us some games with our young players," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "We missed a switch that gave Jason Terry an open three, which gets the game into overtime."

The Cavs made 11-of-23 shots from beyond the arc and also held a 58-56 rebounding edge.
