Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins led a balanced scoring attack with 26 points as the Detroit Pistons avenged a home loss to the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday with a 124-106 triumph at the United Center.

Clifford Robinson scored 21 points, Jerry Stackhouse 19 and Ben Wallace 14 with 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 52 percent (47-of-91) en route to their fourth straight road victory and eighth in nine contests away from The Palace at Auburn Hills.

"We've won, like, 17 of our last 20 on the road," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "I'm starting to wonder if we should stay in a hotel when we are at home. I don't have any explanation for it, but I really like the way we're playing on the road."

Detroit (48-32), the Central Division champion and the second seed in the Eastern Conference, has a one-game lead over Boston (47-33) and needs one more victory for home-court advantage should it meet the Celtics in the second round of the playoffs.

Atkins, who had 15 first-quarter points, gave the Pistons the lead for good at 22-21 on a 19-foot jumper with 2:23 left in the opening period. Detroit led 31-24 entering the second quarter, 63-52 at halftime and 90-79 through three quarters.

"I just kept getting open shot and I kept shooting them," said Atkins, who made 11-of-21 attempts. "Teams are playing me different ways now and the coaches are showing more confidence in me."

"Chucky came out real aggressive for us tonight," Stackhouse said. "He was really knocking down his shot. What we've tried to do all year is get the ball to that hot hand and it was him tonight. We've got four or five guys who can have that kind of game and hit double figures anytime."

The Pistons, who fell to the Bulls 102-101 on Wednesday, held a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter.

"This game became a must-win for us to ensure home court," Stackhouse said. "We knew we needed this win after the Bulls played well and beat us the other night. Their young guys are really playing well and have a tremendous upside."

Jalen Rose had 26 points for Chicago, which shot 52 percent (40-of-77) and also had six players reach double figures but nevertheless lost its 60th game of the season. It was the third year in a row that the Bulls have dropped at least 60 games, matching the NBA record set by the 1995-98 Vancouver Grizzlies.

"We couldn't get the stops," Rose said. "We have to get our guys in the paint to protect the basket. There is no question Detroit is good. Their power forwards can shoot the threes and they play great together. We made a run and they let us back in but then they stuck it to us."

The Bulls entered their final home contest having won a season high-tying three straight games.

"The biggest disappointment tonight probably was the fact that we have been playing pretty good and I really felt like our fans have been terrific, just terrific all season, really the last four years," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "I felt like it was an opportunity for us to send them away feeling pretty good about us. So that's what I'm most disappointed about, that we did not come out with our best effort."
