Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs seem intent on winning the Midwest Division, even if there is an unintended consequence.

Tim Duncan scored 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Spurs built a 21-point lead after one quarter and coasted to their seventh straight win, a 113-92 rout of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Duncan nailed a rare 3-pointer to cap an 18-0 run at the end of the first as San Antonio claimed a 44-23 advantage. The Spurs were well on their way to maintaining their one-half game lead over Dallas in the Midwest.

"We did jump on them pretty good," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We don't usually score that many points in the first quarter, but we shot pretty well in the first half and especially in that quarter."

San Antonio can clinch its third Midwest title in four years by winning its final two games. However, winning the division will put the Spurs on the same side of the bracket as the Los Angeles Lakers, who swept San Antonio in the conference finals a year ago.

"Two games," Duncan said. "We've just got to win out and we can take care of our own business. It feels great to be playing like this right now, going into the end of the season."

The 44 points in the first quarter were the most ever allowed by the Grizzlies in the opening quarter. Rookie Pau Gasol scored 19 points to lead Memphis, which has lost 19 straight games to San Antonio.

"It was a tough one," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said. "They scored 44 points in the first quarter and that was pretty much the game. They took it to us. They played a good ballgame."

Duncan made 12-of-17 shots and also added seven assists for San Antonio, which held a 60-42 advantage in points in the paint. Duncan has emerged as a leading candidate for what would be his first Most Valuable Player award.

Duncan was not the only Spur to dominate inside as Malik Rose matched a career high with 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Rose made 11-of-13 shots.

"It's really important for us to be on a roll because the playoffs are like a race," Rose said. "We wanna be positioned to be playing the best basketball possible at that time."

Jason Williams nailed a jumper with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter that pulled the Grizzlies within 26-23. San Antonio proceeded to dominate the rest of the quarter by manhandling Memphis inside.

Rose started the decisive burst with a pair of baskets and rookie Tony Parker added a basket for a 32-23 advantage. Steve Smith's 3-pointer and another inside basket by Rose pushed the lead to 14 points.

Jason Hart made two free throws and Antonio Daniels converted a layup for an 18-point cushion. Duncan then nailed his first 3-pointer of the season and 10th of his career to cap the burst.

"That's not our usual game plan, to score that many points," Popovich said. "That made it a little bit tougher on Memphis."

Mark Bryant was the only other player in double figures for San Antonio with 12 points. Daniels handed out seven assists and Parker added six as the Spurs racked up 37 assists.

San Antonio shot 58 percent (47-of-81) and held a 42-33 rebounding edge.

Williams scored 15 points and Lorenzen Wright added 14 for Memphis, which had a three-game home winning streak snapped. The Grizzlies finished their first season in Memphis at 15-26 at home, the same mark last year in Vancouver.
