Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Michael Olowokandi scored 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Los Angeles Clippers completed their home schedule with a 92-84 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Corey Maggette and Quentin Richardson contributed 13 apiece for the Clippers, who finished 25-16 at home. Los Angeles (39-42), which plays its last game at Golden State on Wednesday, will finish with a losing record for the ninth straight season, but has eight more wins than last year.

"We can do something that only one other team in NBA history (1984-85 Houston Rockets) has done -- go from 15 wins to two years later winning 40 games," Clippers coach Alvin Gentry said. "Forty wins sounds better than 39, plus we would like to end on a positive note."

"It was an up-and-down season," Richardson said. "We tried to finish on a playoff note, but we couldn't pull it off. We just have to build off this. We still had a solid year. We'll come back next year."

Rookie Pau Gasol had 19 points and 11 rebounds and fellow first-year player Shane Battier scored 19 points for Memphis, which needs to win its season finale at Seattle on Wednesday to notch its franchise-record 24th victory of the season.

"Whether we win 23 or 24, it was still an excellent season for these guys," Grizzlies coach Sidney Lowe said. "I still feel excellent about these guys. It's that time, to start taking a look at these guys (the younger players on the team) ... This was nice (the game tonight) because it is a team where the guys they have coming off the bench could start. This was a good challenge."

In the second quarter, the Clippers used an 18-2 run to erase a seven-point deficit and take a 44-35 lead with 1:53 left.

Los Angeles started the third with a 16-8 spurt, capped by Olowokandi's turnaround hook shot with 7:05 remaining.

After the Clippers went ahead by 13 points in the fourth, Memphis scored eight straight points to pull within, 82-77, with 5:08 to go, but could not get closer and lost its third straight to Los Angeles.

"It was good that everybody came out and played loose and had fun," Maggette said. "We showed the fans that we appreciate them."

Earl Boykins contributed 11 points and six assists and Darius Miles had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Clippers, who shot 47 percent (38-of-81) from the field. Elton Brand grabbed 10 rebounds but Los Angeles was outrebounded, 41-39.

Jason Williams had 11 points and eight assists and Lorenzen Wright and Stromile Swift scored 10 points apiece for the Grizzlies, who shot 44 percent (37-for-84).
