Game StoryBOSTON (Ticker) -- Trenton Hassell gave the Chicago Bulls their first lead since the first quarter, then gave them their first win of the season. Hassell scored Chicago's final eight points over the last three minutes and the Bulls survived awful free-throw shooting by rookie Jay Williams to stun the Boston Celtics, 99-96, in the season opener for both teams. Hassell, a second-year guard, hit a 3-pointer with one minute remaining to snap a 96-96 tie. Williams, the second overall pick in the 2002 draft who had his problems with foul shots at Duke, missed two from the line with 1:30 remaining and another pair with 8.8 seconds left. "This was our goal, to come in and get the first one out of the way," Hassell said. "This is a big win for us. It helps us mentally and it gives us confidence that we can play together and win ballgames in this league." "I wanted to be in that situation," Williams said. "I wanted to be the guy to get fouled. For the first time in a while, I got nervous. When I went to the line, my legs were kind of shaking a bit. I'm just glad we were able to come out with a win, because if we didn't, it would have been a long trip back." Boston's last chance to tie was a 3-pointer by Antoine Walker, who missed. Hassell gave Chicago its first lead since the opening two minutes at 96-93 on a 3-pointer with 2:23 to play. He finished with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. "He took on the challenge," Bulls coach Bill Cartwright said. "That's what we talked about during the timeout. Somebody's going to have to step up besides Jalen (Rose). He did and made a couple huge shots for us." Rose had 21 points and 12 assists for Chicago, which shot 50 percent (39-of-78) from the field but just 60 percent (15-of-25) from the line. Paul Pierce led the Celtics with 28 points, adding seven rebounds and seven assists. "It's tough to swallow, it's the first game," Pierce said. "Once we opened up the game and gave them a little bit of energy, they were able to come back and take the lead and eventually win." The Celtics led by as many as 13 points and took a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. "Tough loss for our ballclub," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "I think that Chicago played extremely well and they're a good basketball team." Boston's Tony Delk was impressive in his move to starting point guard, scoring 23 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the arc. Bulls forward Tyson Chandler was ejected in third quarter after receiving his second technical foul for hanging on the rim after a dunk. The second-year forward was Chicago's leading scorer with 13 points before being tossed. Despite his foul shooting woes, Williams had 13 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in his NBA debut. He was 0-of-5 from the line. "I'm still fairly mad I missed five free throws," Williams added. "I don't understand, but stuff like that happens. I'm just glad we won our game." Chicago won on opening night for the first time since November 1, 1996, when Michael Jordan scored 30 points in a 107-98 win here.
