Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The new backcourt of the Detroit Pistons looks just fine. Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups combined for 38 points in their Detroit debuts as the Pistons rallied for an Pistons 86-77 victory over the New York Knicks in the season opener for both teams. Despite winning 50 games and the Central Division title last season, the Pistons made considerable changes. Among them were the trade of leading scorer Jerry Stackhouse and a desire to upgrade at point guard. Hamilton, who was acquired in the deal that sent Stackhouse to Washington, scored 22 points on 8-for-21 shooting and pulled down six rebounds. Billups, signed away from Minnesota as a free agent, added 16 points and was one of five Pistons in double figures. "I was definitely ready to get it over with, come out and get a win," Hamilton said. "As the ball was thrown up, I had a good time. The win made it a lot more sweeter." "It felt good," added Billups. "It's over with now and everybody can settle down and not be so excited. You've got the little banner celebration overwith and we can kind of get down to business." New York led for most of the game until point guard Chucky Atkins - who has moved from the starting lineup to the bench - broke a 68-68 tie with 7:13 left when he hit the first of three consecutive 3-pointers that gave Detroit a nine-point lead with 6:12 to play. "I knew I just had to stay aggressive," Atkins said. "We came in and regrouped at halftime and then came out strong in the fourth quarter. You'll probably see the rest of the year, teams will wear down. We've got a deep team." Atkins finished with 12 points, all in the fourth quarter. Detroit's Ben Wallace picked up where he left off last season, grabbing 14 rebounds. "Everyone that went in that game tonight made a significant contribution," Pistons coach Rick Carlisle said. "Chucky's shot-making really broke the game for us, and boy, did we need it." "When you make everybody on your team a threat, guys gotta respect them," Hamilton added. "It's hard just to focus on one player." Allan Houston scored 31 points on 11-of-27 shooting to pace the Knicks. He shot just 1-of-8 in the fourth quarter, when New York scored 12 points. Charlie Ward hit a jumper 33 seconds into the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 68-62, but New York missed its next 13 shots and found itself down seven with 5:41 to play. Aside from Houston and Kurt Thomas, who chipped in 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, six other Knicks combined to shoot 13-of-42.
