Game Story

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- The Memphis Grizzlies showed that they have two major weapons. The Dallas Mavericks have many more. Steve Nash had 24 points and 13 assists and Michael Finley scored 21 points as the Mavericks had six players in double figures in a 119-108 victory over the Grizzlies, who got a stunning debut from Gordan Giricek. Memphis nearly rallied to upset Dallas behind a pair of dominant performances from 2001 Rookie of the Year Pau Gasol and Giricek. Gasol had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Giricek scored 29 points, the highest total by a player in his NBA debut since Allen Iverson had 30 in 1996. Giricek, who was acquired from San Antonio in the offseason after spending two years playing overseas, made 10-of-13 shots from the floor and 4-of-6 3-pointers. "I was hot and my teammates got the ball to me a lot, so I was able to score," he said. "After six preseason games, I knew what to expect. Where I come from, you always play as hard as you can." "It was a great performance," Gasol said. "He is talented and brave enough to go to the hole every time and shoot the ball." Giricek and Gasol combined to make 20-of-26 shots for Memphis, which shot 56 percent (43-of-77) from the floor. Memphis allowed 100 points through the first three quarters but opened the fourth period with a 22-6 run, pulling within 106-102 on Giricek's 3-pointer with 4:08 remaining. Nash had a three-point play and Raef LaFrentz followed with a layup as Dallas scored 13 of the game's final 16 points. "The fourth quarter, we got sloppy with the ball and they got hot," Nash said. "It was a certainly a wake-up call, a situation you don't want to be in after being up 20 points." "We got a little lackadaisical," Mavs forward Dirk Nowitzki said. "We left them open, they started knocking down shots, then we got back on the ball and began executing. We just had to step it up." Nowitzki had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Nick Van Exel scored 16 points off the bench for the Mavs. LaFrentz finished with 14 points and Eduardo Najera collected 12 and 10 rebounds. Rookie Drew Gooden scored 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting for the Grizzlies, who have lost nine straight meetings with the Mavs. Dallas had a 58-52 lead with 82 seconds left in the first half before pulling away with a 31-16 run. Nash scored 10 points and Nowitzki added eight during the spurt, which gave the Mavericks their largest lead at 89-68 with 6:04 to go in the third period. Memphis made 9-of-16 shots in the fourth quarter, when Dallas shot just 7-of-19. "I thought tonight our defense in the second half hurt us," said Dallas coach Del Harris, who was filling in for the suspended Nelson clan. "When we got up 20, we were very frivolous with the ball." The Mavericks finished at 50 percent (47-of-95) from the floor and made 10-of-24 3-pointers. They held a 46-40 rebounding edge and benefited from 21 Grizzlies' turnovers. "When you get to the boards it makes a difference," Harris said. "That was an area that we were near the bottom of the league last year. We wanted to improve, so we've worked hard to get better at that." Harris coached the Mavs in place of Don Nelson, who with hia son and assistant Donnie was suspended two games by the league for contact with players who were not eligible for the draft.
