Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The addition of Jerry Stackhouse didn't do much for the Washington Wizards' offense. Morris Peterson had 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Vince Carter scored 18 points as the Toronto Raptors opened their season with an ugly 74-68 victory over the Wizards. Stackhouse was acquired by Washington in an offseason six-player deal in an to bolster an offense that averaged less than 94 points last season, despite the presence of Michael Jordan. The two-time All-Star guard scored 19 points in his debut but got little help from his new teammates. The Wizards shot just 30 percent (24-of-81) from the floor and were held to their lowest total since January 16. The starting frontcourt of Christian Laettner, Bryon Russell and Kwame Brown combined to make just 6-of-22 shots, and Jordan - in his new role as sixth man - scored eight points on 4-of-14 shooting. "We were just out of sync," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "Toronto played well defensively, but I found that we were very impatient. A lot of it could have been jitters and guys wanting to do well. Offensively, we were terrible." "Early on, everyone was fumbling the ball," Jordan said. "It was one of those games where it was pretty ugly on both sides. For us to come out and expect everyone to be clicking is far-fetched." The Raptors shot just 36 percent (27-of-76), but Peterson and Carter combined to make 12-of-19 shots and 12-of-14 free throws. Antonio Davis had nine points and 12 rebounds and Jelani McCoy grabbed a career-high 12 boards. "The key for us was that we came out and played defense," Peterson said. "That's what's going to get us wins. It's a good start for us to stick together and get it done." Carter, who missed the final 13 games last season and the playoffs with a knee injury, made 6-of-14 shots and 6-of-7 free throws. "I felt good," he said. "I was tired after the first two minutes, I think I was trying to hard. I was running a little too fast but I was able to settle down and get everybody involved. I am 100 percent." "I though he looked good," Toronto coach Lenny Wilkens said. "He got a little anxious but he settled in. We have to have him involved a lot, so we have to run things for him." Brown, the 2001 top overall draft pick who struggled as a rookie, had 12 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Wizards. Toronto had a 20-16 lead after Jordan opened the second quarter with a runner. The Raptors responded with 14 consecutive points led by Peterson, who made all three of his shots during the burst. Voshon Lenard capped the run with a jumper to give Toronto its largest lead at 34-16 with 7:05 remaining. Washington scored only nine points in the third quarter and did not threaten until scoring 10 of the game's final 12 points. The Wizards' night was typified midway through the fourth quarter when Jordan missed a breakaway dunk and Stackhouse fired an airball from 3-point range on back-to-back possessions. "We were all like that," Stackhouse said. "When that happens you miss layups and you miss dunks. Even Michael."
