Game StoryATLANTA (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks are a different team with Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Glenn Robinson scored 30 points and Abdur-Rahim added 17 in his season debut as the Hawks bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 105-98 victory over the Utah Jazz. Abdur-Rahim had a sore back and did not play Wednesday in the Hawks' season-opening loss to the defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Nets. But he returned against the Jazz and proved that he and Robinson give Atlanta a potent frontcourt duo. Robinson made 12-of-21 shots from the floor, 6-of-6 free throws and collected seven assists and five rebounds. Abdur-Rahim shot 7-of-13 and grabbed five boards as Atlanta scored 48 points in the paint. "Shareef took some of the pressure off of me tonight. That's the type of player he is," Robinson said. "He takes the pressure off of everybody when he gets the ball. We just stay out of his way and let him go to work." Robinson was acquired from Milwaukee in an offseason trade and had 34 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists on Wednesday in his Hawks' debut. "I like to try to be an all-around player," he said. "People know I can score, but if I can get an extra rebound or an extra assist, I'm helping the team. I'm all about helping the team win." Jason Terry had 21 points and matched a career high with 13 assists for the Hawks, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) from the floor to overcome 23 turnovers. Alan Henderson had 10 points and eight rebounds and Ira Newble added 10 and seven. "It was a good first win," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "It's good to see a lot of the guys contributing. Everyone really moved the ball around, I hope we can continue to do that this year. We need to be a little more consistent on defense. It was good to put tonight's game in the right column." Robinson scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting in the opening period and added four points in the second. The Hawks had a 50-46 halftime lead and opened the third quarter with a 25-11 run. Abdur-Rahim started the second half with a 3-pointer from the right corner and scored 10 points during the burst, which extended Atlanta's advantage to 75-57. The Jazz pulled within 84-76 with 5:45 remaining, but Abdur-Rahim responded with a jumper and Terry scored five straight points to push the Hawks' lead to 15 at 4:24. Karl Malone had 20 points and nine rebounds and John Stockton added 15 points and 11 assists for the Jazz, who never had the lead and fell to 0-2. "The easiest thing to do is blame somebody else," Malone said. "You're disappointed in losing. Winning ain't everything, but winning makes things a whole lot easier. We're not together as a team right now. Nobody expects us to do anything. We haven't disappointed anybody." Matt Harpring scored 19 points and fellow reserve Jarron Collins added 18 for Utah, which was limited to 43 percent (33-of-77) shooting and committed 21 turnovers. "We had 20 turnovers last night, 21 turnovers tonight. You don't deserve to win when you play like that," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "When you play that way, it doesn't matter who you are or who you think you are, you're not going to be able to beat anybody. That's not even good CBA basketball."
