Game StoryCHICAGO (Ticker) -- It is only the first weekend of the season but so far, the Chicago Bulls have helped turn the NBA upside down. Jalen Rose scored 11 of his 21 points in a decisive spurt early in the third quarter as the Bulls posted an 84-79 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in their home opener. While Phil Jackson's defending champion Los Angeles Lakers lost their first two games, his former team is off to its first 2-0 start since 1996-97, when it opened with 12 wins en route to the second of three straight titles. Wednesday's season-opening 99-96 victory at Boston enabled Chicago to move over .500 for the first time since April 1998, when Michael Jordan was still playing for the Bulls. However, Chicago coach Bill Cartwright, an assistant for two of the six championships the Bulls won under Jackson, urged caution. "It's hard to measure after two games," he said. "It is a good thing we got a lot of players in the game. We got a good effort from a lot of people. Our point guards have to take better care of the ball." The Bulls committed 22 turnovers but held the Hornets to just 38.5 percent (30-of-78) from the field. Baron Davis made just 5-of-21 shots for New Orleans and scored 14 points. "We are a good team when we have the good ball movement," said Hornets guard Davis Wesley, who scored 19 points. "We just didn't execute at all tonight. We didn't really do anything defensively until the fourth quarter, and then it was too late." Friday's contest was a sluggish affair, with Chicago holding a 42-39 halftime edge, but the Bulls turned back the Hornets with key runs at the start of the third and fourth quarters. With Chicago holding a 48-45 lead, Rose completed a three-point play, then hit a nine-footer and 20-footer to make it 55-45 with 5:07 left in the third period. The Bulls never were seriously threatened thereafter. "Two-and-0 sounds real good," Rose said. "I give these guys a lot of credit. We worked hard in the offseason and in the preseason. It has paid off. Everybody has taken pride in their performance." "The big thing in this game is that we were able to get back and keep them in their half-court defense game," Cartwright added. "We were able to limit their points in transition." Donyell Marshall recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who outscored the Hornets, 42-26, in the paint and gave up just four fast-break points. "Everything we did was spotty," New Orleans coach Paul Silas said. "Our defense, offense and whole game just started out by getting us in a hole. We weren't playing well and thought we could just do it at the end." Eddie Robinson's two foul shots capped a 12-1 spurt that gave the Bulls their biggest lead, 75-59, with 6:14 to go. The Hornets made a run, closing to 81-74 with 1:12 left on a free throw by Jamal Mashburn, who led New Orleans with 21 points. But Rose delivered the back-breaker, following in his own miss to make it 83-74 with 48 seconds to go. It was his only basket of the fourth quarter. "We are excited about our position, but at the same time, it is a long road ahead, " Rose said. "This is a marathon, it is just two games."
