Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Richard Hamilton scored 11 of his 23 points in the first quarter as the Detroit Pistons jumped ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies and never looked back on the way to a 109-86 rout. Hamilton shot 3-of-5 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line in the first quarter. Detroit's backcourt scored 20 points in the opening period, while the Memphis guards combined for just two. "I think Rip (Hamilton) is playing very efficiently," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "He has more diverse skills than people realize. Not only can he score, but he makes plays for other guys." Hamilton scored nine points during a 17-2 run that came after the Grizzlies had scored the first six points. He also had two assists in the first quarter. "When a team that plays defense like that gets a big lead on you, there's not much you can do," Memphis coach Sidney Lowe said. "Their defense is so good that it overshadows their offense, but they can score points, too." Memphis guard Gordan Giricek, who scored 29 points in his NBA debut on Wednesday, had a disappointing second game, going 1-of-8 from the field for six points. "I think everybody in the league saw that he had 29 Wednesday night," Hamilton said. "I spent a lot of time watching tape so that I'd know how to stop him. I think we were really focused tonight and did a great job of taking them away from what they wanted to do." Giricek had replaced Michael Dickerson in the starting lineup, but Dickerson could not provide much relief after picking up three fouls in the first quarter. Dickerson, suffering from back spasms, played just five minutes and did not score. Detroit led 31-18 after 12 minutes and 54-34 at the half. Meanwhile, Memphis moved the ball poorly, collecting just four assists in the first two quarters. The Pistons led by as many as 30 points in the second half. "We were pleased with the way we played," Carlisle said. "We started to show signs of getting better. We did a better job with turnovers tonight and rebounding has been solid." Billups scored 15 points and Zeljko Rebraca added 13, including seven in the first quarter. Detroit's Ben Wallace, who led the NBA with 13 rebounds per game last season, pulled in 14 for the second straight game. Pau Gasol and rookie Drew Gooden were the only Grizzlies with more than two points in the first half. Both finished with 21 points. "I wasn't really pleased with any of my game tonight," Gooden said. "I feel that I can play a lot better defensively and get more rebounds." Gooden had five rebounds to lead Memphis. The Grizzlies were outrebounded 41-33, including a 22-13 margin for the Pistons starters. The Grizzlies have lost their last four visits to Detroit.
