Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Troy Hudson showed his former team that he is best suited as a starter. Kevin Garnett just showed that he is one of the best. Hudson scored 19 points while Garnett had a triple-double in three quarters to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 111-105 victory over the Orlando Magic. After playing backup point guard for two seasons with the Magic, Hudson was signed as a free agent in August to fill a void created by the oft-injured Terrell Brandon, who is out indefinitely. He shot 8-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. "I want to have a good night every night," said Hudson, who scored 15 points in the first half. "I've had a lot of fun with those guys on the court." Garnett became the first player to record a triple-double this season, finishing with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. The superstar forward has averaged at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in each of the last three seasons. "I could care less about the triple-doubles," said Garnett, who has seven for his career. "I was just happy the guys were hitting." Minnesota's Anthony Peeler made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points as he continued to fill in nicely for Wally Szczerbiak, who signed a six-year, $65 million contract extension earlier in the day but remains sidelined with a toe injury. The Magic, who trailed by as many as 26 points, cut the deficit to four on a jumper in the lane by Tracy McGrady with 1:16 remaining. But they got no closer, suffering their first loss of the season. The Timberwolves ran off 18 straight points early in the first quarter to jump to a 22-7 lead. "You dig a hole like that, it's tough to win a basketball game," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "You can fall behind other teams, but not them." Grant Hill led Orlando with 27 points and was a perfect 17-for-17 from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and delivered five assists. "We just have to come out better defensively, because we got into a deep hole and that was tough to come back from," Hill said. "We knew we could come back and we did, but they just outplayed us in the first half." Garnett's impact was also felt on defense, where he guarded McGrady nearly every minute he was on the court. McGrady struggled in the first half, scoring four points on 1-of-7 shooting. He finished with 18. "I'm going to give KG his props and the Minnesota team their props," McGrady said. "This was the best I've ever been defended in a game." "I just tried to keep a hand in his face and keep him in front of me, Garnett said. "I had great team defense behind me. He's a handful to guard."
