Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks are trying to develop a defensive identity and may have found part of it against the Phoenix Suns. Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points to lead six players in double figures as the Mavericks opened their home schedule with an easy 97-83 victory over the Suns. Dallas opened the season with a 119-108 win at Memphis and got off to another quick start against Phoenix. But the highlight for the Mavericks may have been their defensive work as they held the Suns to 40 points in the second half. "We played a good defensive game, particularly in the middle quarters," acting coach Del Harris said. "The game plan was to at least make it difficult for (Stephon) Marbury and (Shawn) Marion, and our guys were able to do that. We didn't have a repeat of the fourth quarter like we did in Memphis the other night." Harris finished his stint as coach at 2-0. Don Nelson and assistant Donnie Nelson finished their two-game suspensions for conducting illegal workouts with foreign players. The Mavericks built a 31-25 lead after one quarter and extended it throughout. Nick Van Exel dribbled past Tom Gugliotta and banked in a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer for a 55-43 advantage. The referees looked at a replay, as per the new rules, but Van Exel clearly released the shot in time. Dallas kept up in the third quarter and took a 69-51 lead on a 3-pointer by Michael Finley with 5:22 left in the period. The margin was 81-60 heading into the fourth. "We've never had a problem with our offense," Finley said. "Our main emphasis was defense. Offensively, everybody was clicking, except for myself. Defensively, we got better." Finley netted 17 points and Steve Nash, another former Sun, finished with 15 for Dallas, which is 3-0 at the American Airlines Center against Phoenix. "I think we're improving," Nash said. "I think we're showing that we have concentrated on it and getting better. By no means are we perfect. We're moving in that direction still. It's going to take small steps. Hopefully, we can just keep improving." Mavericks starting forward Raef LaFrentz was forced to leave the game after a collision with two players in the third quarter. He suffered a sprained right ankle and did not return. Van Exel and Eduardo Najera each netted 13 points off the bench and Shawn Bradley fouled out with 11 for the Mavs. Dallas limited Phoenix to 42 percent (33-of-79) shooting. "I think we became impatient with the offense," Suns coach Frank Johnson said. "Sometimes we have to look inside instead of always looking outside because inside is there. That comes with understanding and learning." Marbury made 5-of-17 shots for 15 points and added 10 assists as he was harassed by Nash all night. Marbury also had five of the Suns' 22 turnovers, which the Mavericks converted into 22 points. Gugliotta made all six of his shots for 13 points and Marion added 13 and 10 rebounds, although he hit only 5-of-13 shots. The Suns held a commanding 49-34 edge on the glass. "They are two of the premier players in the league," Finley said of Marbury and Marion. "We just wanted to make it tough on them, throw some different looks at them and keep them kind of confused. For the most part, we did that tonight." Dallas converted 20-of-27 free-throw attempts as Nowitzki made 7-of-8. Nash handed out eight assists for the Mavericks, who won their home opener for the fourth straight year.
