Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Jamal Mashburn stuck it to his former team. Mashburn scored 35 points, including a clutch basket in the final minute, as the New Orleans Hornets defeated the Miami Heat, 100-95. New Orleans led 92-83 with 4:12 remaining after a tip-in by P.J. Brown, who was acquired in the nine-player trade that sent Eddie Jones to Miami. The Heat stormed back and got within 96-95 on a 3-pointer by Jones with 1:07 to play. But Mashburn, who suffered from vertigo and an abdominal strain last year, hit a tough jumper with Malik Allen in his face with 45 seconds to go, then made 1-of-2 free throws with 17 seconds left to give Miami a four-point cushion. "Mash is always going to be there," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "The thing that I must understand is that I must have patience with him because he really didn't play a lot of basketball last year. He just now started playing basketball again. He came through for us tonight and that's the kind of basketball he's capable of playing." "I think we did a good job in defending Jamal, but he's a good player and he'll get his good looks," said Heat coach Pat Riley, whose teams never had started 0-2 in seven years in Miami. "In the third quarter, he basically turned his game up a notch." Courtney Alexander sank 1-of-2 from the line with two seconds left to cap the scoring. David Wesley scored 19 points, Baron Davis had 15 and Brown 14 for the Hornets, who improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 at home. Jones had 30 points and Allen 12 for Miami. Rookie Caron Butler also scored 12 points but made just 3-of-11 shots and had difficulty defending Mashburn. "The main thing is to try to make him take tough shots," Butler said. "He was taking fadeaways off of one leg, bankers, all kinds of stuff. As a player, you did your job if a player is taking tough shots against you. He's a great player, and he was really hitting his shots tonight." "My theory is to just go out and play," Mashburn said. "We (just) have to go out and produce and play." Miami had a 53-41 halftime lead after outscoring the Hornets on the break, 19-2. But New Orleans went on a 25-8 run midway through the third quarter and took a 75-71 edge into the fourth. "You can't run without rebounding," Jones said. "We let them attack us in the third quarter and we did not come back attacking. They attacked the offensive boards and we let them do what they wanted." Jones scored 12 of the Heat's 26 first-quarter points as they took a six-point edge into the second period. Miami extended the advantage to 47-32 on a fast-break layup by Eddie House with 2:54 to go before the break. "I thought we played a very poor first half," Silas said. "Energy-wise, we weren't efficient. We were turning the ball over and getting outrebounded. Second half, I thought that's the way we must play every game in order to win. If we just show up, we're not going to win very many games." "The game turned around in the second half," Riley said. "They became more physical and we just didn't execute. In the third quarter, they got three long rebounds to get three open 3-pointers. You have to hold them to one shot because you can't give them seven or eight chances at the basket."
