Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Dallas Mavericks blew a big early lead 
but showed enough poise down the stretch to hold off the upstart
Golden State Warriors.

Steven Nash had 30 points and eight rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki
added 24 and 13 as the Mavericks collected their 14th straight
win against the Warriors, 107-100, to improve to 3-0.

Nash had 17 points, Nowitzki 16 and Michael Finley 15 of his 17
as the Mavericks raced to a 22-point second-quarter lead and
took a 63-45 edge into the break.

But the Warriors stormed back behind their young backcourt of
21-year-old Jason Richardson and 20-year-old Gilbert Arenas, who
finished with 39 and 22 points, respectively.

"That's what I like about this team, we're always playing hard
until the fourth-quarter buzzer," Richardson said.  "We compete
hard and give 100 percent effort every game."

Arenas tied the contest at 89-89 with a 3-pointer with 5:13 to
play, but Nash nailed a pair of free throws 30 seconds later to
put the Mavs ahead for good.

"In the last couple of games, we have been doing the same thing,
falling behind early and then battling to get back into the
game," Arenas said.  "We need to come out hard from the
beginning and we need to take the lead for once."

After Richardson made 1-of-2 foul shots to get the Warriors
within 96-93, backup guard Nick Van Exel put home a jump-hook
from the paint and a 3-pointer, and Nash added a lefthanded
scoop layup to give the Mavs a 10-point cushion with 59 seconds
to play.

"That's just basically the bench trying to give the team a
spark," Van Exel said.  "We let them get all the way back into
the game.  At the time, we needed a big play.  I was in the
right position to make a few."

"He got some big buckets and carried us in the fourth," Nowitzki
said.  "He was huge.  That's our strength - we have so many
guys who can score in the last couple of minutes.  There are a
lot of us out there, so it's great to have so many guys on your
team who can score."

The Mavs shot 47 percent (41-of-88) and limited the Warriors to
36 percent (32-of-89).  Golden State has lost three games in a
row since a season-opening victory over San Antonio.

"We're proud that we continue to compete, but close only counts
in horseshoes and hand grenades," Warriors coach Eric Musselman
said.  "We're not doing either one of them.  For a club as young
as we are, there's not a lot of others that when we were down
20 would have fought back and competed the way they did."

Dallas, which won its eighth straight home contest over Golden
State, has not lost to the Warriors since April 10, 1999.  New
Jersey, which is 4-0, and 3-0 Seattle are the only other
undefeated teams in the league.

The Mavs have held leads of at least 21 points in all three of
their victories this season.  They have not trailed by more than
three points in any of their contests.

Mavs coach Don Nelson returned following a two-game suspension
for attending workouts of players ineligible for the draft.

"We made again what looked to be an easy game a hard one,"
Nelson said.  "I'm pretty disappointed with a couple of players
and things that we weren't able to do against a simple defensive
tactic.  We didn't seem to be able to figure out the simplest
things in the second half.  It disappointed me."

Richardson made 12-of-27 shots, including 6-of-9 from the arc,
and 9-of-11 free throws en route to a season high in points.

"He's a great kid and he's really worked hard," Musselman said.
"He's so, so coachable, it's amazing.  He really is coachable.
He's an easy guy to talk to and be up front with because he's
got no agenda other than trying to help this team win and trying
to make himself a better basketball player."

"We took Richardson out of his slump," Nelson said.  "He was
fantastic and made some outstanding plays.  He made it difficult
for us."
