Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Glenn Robinson continues to fit well with the new-look Atlanta Hawks. Robinson scored 23 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 and 12 rebounds as the Hawks opened a five-game road trip with a 103-87 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Robinson was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after opening with three efforts of 30 points or more in his first three games with the Hawks. He saw his streak come to an end Tuesday, but his output was more than enough for Atlanta's third straight win. "I can take the shot, but I am definitely confident in my teammates," Robinson said. "My goal is not to lead the league in scoring but to get this team to the playoffs." Atlanta never trailed and took a 58-43 lead at halftime, connecting on 16-of-17 free throws. The Nuggets used a spirited rally in the third quarter to pull into a 70-70 tie on a basket with Juwan Howard with 2:52 left and trailed just 74-73 entering the final period. The lead was 80-78 when Alan Henderson scored inside, Robinson drilled a 3-pointer and Abdur-Rahim added a basket to trigger a 19-3 run. Dion Glover scored seven points in the spurt, including a short jumper that made it 99-81 with just over three minutes remaining. "After we made our comeback, we had a couple of open looks that we couldn't convert," Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "They were able to come down and convert our misses into layups and that kind of broke our spirit." Howard collected 25 points and 15 rebounds in his season debut for Denver. He was suspended for the first two games due to a preseason game fight and missed Saturday's victory at Portland with a stomach virus. "We had a good third quarter, but two bad ones in the first and fourth," Howard said. "We can not win games like that. Good teams play hard and well from start to finish." Henderson scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and fellow reserve Glover added 14 on 6-of-10 shooting as Atlanta overcame 25 turnovers, which led to 28 points. The Hawks shot 51 percent (39-of-76) and notched their first road win of the year. "Dion Glover and Alan Henderson stepped it up in the second half, and Glover gave us a big lift offensively," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "We created some transition opportunities off of our defense." Jason Terry, who has had to adjust to the presence of another scorer in Robinson, had 14 points and eight assists. Terry has seen his assist average rise to 8.2 per game from 5.7 last season due to the more versatile attack. "We don't expect Glenn to go out and score 30 points," Abdur-Rahim said. "We've got three guys on this team that are capable of getting 30 or 40 points on any night. Both of us draw a lot of attention and neither one of us are scared to pass the ball. If we keep moving the ball, keep looking for each other and making plays for each other, then we're going to be fine." The Hawks raced to a 13-2 lead and never looked back. Atlanta added 33 points in the second quarter and had a 68-51 cushion early in the third period. "We were simply manhandled right from the start," Bzdelik said. "I told our players after the game this is a league of men and you need to play like it at all times. You need to be determined and you need to play with force and you need to execute with force to get where you're supposed to be and not let someone push you away from where you're supposed to be." James Posey, who had his first career triple-double Saturday at Portland, finished with 21 points but was the only other Nugget in double figures. Denver shot 37 percent (31-of-83) from the field and was outrebounded, 45-35. Nuggets point guard Chris Whitney was taken off the court with 5:42 remaining due to a moderate ankle sprain. Whitney finished with seven points and seven assists.
