Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs refused to lose 
to the Golden State Warriors for a second time in this young
season.

Tony Parker and Stephen Jackson connected from the outside and
Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Malik Rose on the inside as the
Spurs avenged a season-opening defeat to the Warriors with a
93-73 triumph.

Parker scored 23 points, Jackson added 13 and Duncan, Robinson
and Rose each recorded a double-double as the Spurs beat the
Warriors for the 20th time in 22 meetings.

Golden State, which upset San Antonio on October 30, held a
45-42 halftime lead before the Spurs countered with a 19-4 run.
They took the lead for good at 50-49 on the second of two free
throws by Duncan with 8:43 to play. Robinson had six points in
the burst.

"They made a run and we gave up," Warriors coach Eric Musselman
said.  "Mentally, we have to be stronger than that.  I (have)
never seen that from this team before.  They turned up the
pressure in the third and we caved.  It can bother us as coaches
every night, but it has to bother the guys that suit up if it's
going to change."

San Antonio took a 73-57 advantage into the fourth quarter on a
40-footer by Rose just before the buzzer, and Golden State got
no closer than 12 points thereafter.  It was Rose's seventh
3-pointer in seven seasons.

The Spurs shot 45 percent (36-of-80) from the field and held the
Warriors to 35 percent (27-of-78).  San Antonio made 8-of-15
shots from the arc while Golden State missed all eight
3-pointers.

"That's the way we need to play to reach our final goal," Spurs
coach Gregg Popovich said.  "We need to continue to improve;
we're not there yet.  We have a long, long way to go.  The will
is there, the work ethic is there.  Hopefully it will happen
sooner than later."

Robinson had 13 rebounds, Rose 12 and Duncan 10 as the Spurs
held a 53-39 advantage on the glass and blocked 10 shots.

Golden State's Antawn Jamison scored 16 points but just two in
the second half.  Jason Richardson and Gilbert Arenas
contributed 14 apiece, one night after scoring 39 and 22 points,
respectively, in a 107-100 setback to Dallas.

"We stopped hitting the easy shot we were getting in the first
half and that affected our defense," Arenas said.  "It's tough
to fight back when they make a 19-4 run.  But I'm not tired and
neither should any of these other guys be tired.  We've been
training all year to get prepared and you know there are going
to be times when you have to play four games in five nights."

"They were a more focused group," Richardson said.  "They hit
the big baskets, but for us, this was not our team.  The most
important thing is for us to put this game behind us."

Paced by Jackson and Rose, San Antonio's bench outscored Golden
State's reserves, 33-11.

"You can't win in this league unless your bench produces,"
Musselman said.  "Adonal Foyle (four points, three rebounds)
played hard, but they had two guys on their bench outscore our
entire bench."

"Everyone has definitely been picking up the slack, especially
on the defensive end," Jackson said.  "That goes for us as a
whole.  We have definitely been working hard and even though we
are missing (the injured) Speedy (Claxton) and Steve (Smith),
guys like Malik, Steve (Kerr) and Manu (Ginobili) definitely
have been stepping up."

Ginobili, a rookie from Argentina who scored eight points in 23
minutes, exited the contest after a knee-on-knee collision with
Richardson with 5:41 remaining.  He did not return.

"He bumped knees with someone, he'll be a little sore," Popvich
said.  "It's good that we have four days until the next game.
He'll be fine."
