Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- The short bench of the Portland Trail Blazers was long on results. Scottie Pippen and Antonio Daniels each scored 16 points to lead a huge effort by the Trail Blazers' reserves as they posted a 94-88 victory over the winless Memphis Grizzlies. Portland was without injured Bonzi Wells and Arvydas Sabonis and suffered another blow when Derek Anderson suffered a concussion two minutes into the game. But the Blazers' bench came through by outscoring the Grizzlies' reserves, 49-9. "We were missing Bonzi, we were missing DA, we were missing Arvydas, so it was a little hard for our game," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "It doesn't matter to me who's on the basketball court, it's just the guys who are out on the court. The guys who were on the court played hard tonight." Lorenzen Wright's basket opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and gave Memphis a 71-70 lead. Portland responded with a 10-0 run, holding the Grizzlies scoreless for more than seven minutes. Jeff McInnis' jumper put the Blazers in front, Dale Davis dunked and Pippen made a basket. McInnis scored again and Zach Randolph had an inside hoop for an 80-71 lead with 5:16 left. A basket by rookie Drew Gooden finally ended the drought for Memphis 58 seconds later. "It started with our defense tonight," Pippen said. "Defense will always be the key. The last few games we have been a little sluggish, so it is very important for us to get off to a good start like we did tonight." Pau Gasol's three-point play pulled the Grizzlies within 87-83 with 1:24 left before Rasheed Wallace answered with a resounding dunk. Memphis misfired on a pair of 3-pointers and Daniels made two free throws for an eight-point lead with 27 seconds to go. "We tried to come back in the game again in the fourth quarter, but we couldn't make it," Gasol said. "They were playing hard, they made some shots and we turned the ball over too many times again in crucial plays." Pippen made 7-of-12 shots and added five assists and five rebounds in a season-high 37 minutes. "I may be the forgotten soldier over here, but I'm professional enough to work my way back into some playing time, and that's what happened tonight," Pippen said. "The opportunity came and I was able to step up." "He showed me he still's got something in that tank," Cheeks said. "Pipp's always been ready to play." Wallace led Portland with 18 points and Ruben Patterson added 14 on 6-of-9 shooting. Starting point guard Damon Stoudamire missed all eight shots and had just one point to go with seven assists in 27 minutes. McInnis helped pick up the slack with 13 points and five assists. He was a key factor in the key run, including his defense on Jason Williams, who had just three points over the final 12 minutes. "Tonight we had a good game," McInnis said. "I think the bench came in and gave us a big help." Gasol scored 23 points and Williams finished with 19 and 11 assists for Memphis, which has lost five straight and is the only team in the NBA without a win. Stromile Swift collected 16 points and nine rebounds and Gooden added 15 points for the Grizzlies, who started last season 0-8. Memphis coach Sidney Lowe felt the seven-minute scoreless stretch was decisive. "They just picked up the intensity," he said. "They got active with their hands, they had hands everywhere. Hands on the ball, hands on the body, hands everywhere." The Grizzlies held a 48-43 halftime advantage and the teams went back and forth in the third quarter. Memphis used a 10-2 run for a four-point edge at 61-57 before Portland rallied. There were three lead changes before a dunk by Patterson gave the Blazers a 70-69 edge heading to the fourth. Portland held a 40-37 edge on the glass behind 13 boards from Davis. Wallace grabbed eight to match Gasol, his counterpart at power forward.
