Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Indiana Pacers' balance offset a career effort by Kurt Thomas. Ron Artest scored 27 points and Brad Miller added 19 as the Pacers pulled away late for a 107-94 victory over the New York Knicks, who received 33 points from Thomas. Indiana placed all five starters in double figures in defeating New York at home for the eighth time in nine meetings. Jermaine O'Neal finished with 18 points and Al Harrington and Jamaal Tinsley each added 14. Tinsley, a Brooklyn native, added 12 assists. "When we play together and share the basketball and do the basic fundamental things, we are beautiful to watch," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said. Thomas matched a career high in points by making 15-of-22 shots for New York. But he was often a one-man show for the Knicks as leading scorer Allan Houston made just 3-of-16 shots for 14 points. "The Pacers' aggressiveness got to us," Kurt Thomas said. "It caused our big men to get in foul trouble early and it put them at the line late and they were able to extend their lead late." Two free throws by Thomas pulled New York within 82-79 with 8:16 left before Indiana clamped down on defense. Artest had eight points in a 23-7 run over nearly 6 1/2 minutes, and back-to-back 3-pointers by Tinsley and Artest made it 105-86 with 1:41 remaining. Artest, a Queens native, had a tremendous shooting night by making 8-of-12 shots and 9-of-10 at the line for his career high with the Pacers. Indiana shot 57 percent (37-of-65) and made 30-of-35 free throws. "It felt like tonight that we're starting to really get this together as a team," Artest said. "Once we got things back on track in the fourth, we tried to take advantage of wearing them down with all of their injuries." Artest also did most of the defensive work on Houston, who entered averaging 28.4 points per game. "Artest showed how good, how tough and aggressive he was defensively," Knicks coach Don Chaney said. "He's a very aggressive player. I knew that we were going to have to match him up against Allan Houston." O'Neal and Harrington each grabbed eight rebounds as Indiana held a commanding 40-28 edge on the glass. O'Neal made 8-of-13 shots in 26 foul-plagued minutes. Indiana came out with tremendous energy and took a 15-7 lead on a three-point play by Harrington with 7:15 left in the opening period. Artest scored the final four points of the quarter for a 38-25 advantage. A finger roll by Harrington gave the Pacers a 71-54 lead with with 6:44 left in the third quarter before New York climbed back into it with a 17-6 run. Thomas scored eight points and Charlie Ward added a pair of baskets. "After we got our 16- or 17-point lead, it's easy to lose a game like that," Artest said. "We started doing a little too much 1-on-1 (before) we got back to playing our tough defense and running the offense." Ward and reserve forward Lee Nailon each added 14 points for New York, which is 0-3 on the road. The Knicks shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80), a season high for a Pacers' foe.
