Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets are starting to learn what it feels like to have a home-court advantage. Jamal Mashburn scored 32 points to lead a balanced attack as the Hornets remained unbeaten in their new home with a 110-104 victory over the Golden State Warriors. In their first season in the Crescent City, the Hornets now play in front of large crowds on a nightly basis, a far cry from their final season in Charlotte, where the 24,000-seat arena often was half-empty. "We take pride in being home," Hornets guard Baron Davis said. "We're an improved team. We're a better team," Hornets forward P.J. Brown said. "And we have a new home, and that's another part of it." Mashburn helped the Hornets improve to 4-0 in the New Orleans Arena, connecting on 12-of-24 shots from the field and all seven of his foul shots in 41 minutes. Led by Mashburn, the Hornets placed all five starters in double figures. P.J. Brown was exceptional on both ends of the floor with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Jason Richardson scored 31 points and Antawn Jamison, matched against Mashburn for much of the night, added 28 for the Warriors, who have lost five straight and fell to 0-4 on a six-game road trip. For the most part, Jamison was guarded by the 6-11 Brown on the offensive end of the floor. "P.J. is a great defender who takes a lot of pride in his game," said Jamison, who made 12-of-27 shots. "P.J. is physical and is able to move his feet. He is a lot stingier than most defenders. I had a lot of shots altered that I normally make." The Warriors were competitive for much of the contest, and a three-point play by Gilbert Arenas had them within 55-54 early in the third quarter. But Mashburn, who often presents matchup problems for opponents with his ability to play away from the basket, scored six points in a 19-7 surge that Davis capped with a 3-pointer for a 74-61 lead with 3:37 left. Davis finished with 14 points and eight assists while backcourt mate David Wesley scored 15 points for the Hornets, who shot 47 percent (42-of-89). Mashburn, who scored 11 points in the third quarter, made a layup with under a second left in the period for an 84-73 advantage. After shooting 51 percent (21-of-41) in the first half, the Warriors cooled down in the third, when they made 8-of-19 shots. They shot 46 percent (39-of-84) overall. "The defense picked us up in the third quarter," Brown said. "That is the staple of our team - the second half. The third quarter was probably our best defensive effort of the season." Charlotte maintained a comfortable lead throughout the fourth quarter, with Golden State getting no closer than six points in the waning seconds. "We lost to a good basketball team this evening," Warriors coach Eric Musselman said. "We continue to do a pretty good job of hanging around and giving ourselves an opportunity to stay in the game. Hopefully as we gain experience, some of our young guys can close the games at some point. I'm really proud of the fact that they didn't quit." Richardson scored 18 points in the first half on 6-of-10 shooting as the Warriors trailed by just four at the break. He finished 11-of-22 from the field.
