Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse has had a good week for the Washington Wizards. Stackhouse scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds and as the Wizards earned their first road win of the season with a 93-79 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Washington won its third straight game with another terrific effort from Stackhouse. The Wizards' prized offseason acquisition made 8-of-15 shots and 8-of-9 at the line in what has become a typical game. Stackhouse scored 35 in a victory over Cleveland on Wednesday and had 29 and a game-winning dunk in a one-point win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. "I said it last night, last night's game didn't mean anything if we didn't win this game tonight," Stackhouse said. "We feel better than what we are. We are still getting to know each other and that's the plus side of it." The Wizards took the lead for good with a 12-2 run, opening a 59-49 advantage on a jumper by Larry Hughes with 4:35 left in the third quarter. Stackhouse scored five points in the burst. The Cavaliers managed just 15 points in the third quarter. "(The) third quarter has been a bad quarter for us," Cleveland guard Bimbo Coles said. "(For) some reason, we come out flat in the third quarter. It takes a lot of energy out of us, I don't think we focus in the third quarter." Cleveland got no closer than 85-79 on a basket by Ricky Davis with just under two minutes to go. Kwame Brown and Stackhouse each made a pair of free throws to seal the victory. The Wizards held a 43-40 lead at halftime and used a unit that included Stackhouse, Brown, Tyronn Lue and rookie Jared Jeffries to take command in the third quarter. Jeffries finished with nine points and six rebounds and Lue had 12 points and five assists. "With the fourth game in five nights, we know we would need our bench," Washington coach Doug Collins said. "I thought that was the difference in the game." Michael Jordan finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists and had a season-high 31 minutes, one more than he played Friday. Washington's bench outscored Cleveland's reserves, 39-11. "On the road, we have to play smart," Jordan said. "We can't get in a a run-gun game. I'm just trying to administer what Doug wants us to do for the offense." Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Tyrone Hill each had double-doubles to lead Cleveland. Ilgauskas collected 19 points and 12 rebounds and Hill added 12 and 16 but the Cavaliers shot just under 35 percent (29-of-84). Ilgauskas made just 4-of-16 shots and Davis connected on just 7-of-23 for 19 points in an ugly effort for Cleveland. The Cavaliers' bench combined to make 4-of-15 shots for 11 points and starters Hill and Darius Miles each fouled out. "We have to do it collectively, (with) our effort," Cavs coach John Lucas said. "We're not necessarily struggling; we're struggling to score." The teams combined for 14 turnovers in a loosely played first quarter in which Washington emerged with a 17-15 lead. Stackhouse scored nine points in the first quarter and matched it with nine in the second.
