Game StoryMIAMI (Ticker) -- Eddie Jones had a game-tying shot blocked and a game-winner sail long in the final five seconds as the Miami Heat fell to the Seattle SuperSonics, 84-82. Jones scored 23 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, and grabbed seven rebounds but could not convert a potential tying layup with five seconds left when Desmond Mason raced in from behind the play to swat the shot out of bounds. "That's the effort we've been looking for, not ever giving up," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "Mase got back on the transition and it looked like it was going into overtime. But it took that kind of effort to win this game." Following a timeout, Jones fired a 3-pointer from the right side, but it sailed over the rim and time ran out. On previous possessions, the Heat had let the shot clock expire, and Brian Grant was stripped underneath the basket by Ansu Sesay. Seattle raced to a 31-20 lead in the first quarter and led by as many of 12 points before Miami started chipping away. The Heat led 65-64 after three quarters, but the SuperSonics made several clutch shots in the final period. "We've got a good team," Sonics guard Gary Payton said. "We were just making mistakes and being careless. Then when the first unit got back in there, we settled things down and executed. We weren't worried." Rashard Lewis scored seven of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that gave Seattle the lead for good at 72-71 with 9:07 left. Lewis was 4-for-4 from the arc, leading a 12-of-17 showing from downtown by Seattle. Lewis also pulled down 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. "It was just one of those nights," said Lewis, who sat quietly in front of his locker after the game with his shoulder wrapped and his feet in ice buckets. Seattle's Vladimir Radmanovic had 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was Radmanovic's second career double-double after picking up his first Friday at Orlando. Gary Payton had 20 points and 11 assists to help Seattle avoid losing for the third time on a four-game eastern swing. The Sonics lost at New Orleans and Orlando and close out the trip with a visit to Washington on Tuesday. The Heat established franchise lows with only two made free throws and four attempts. Miami coach Pat Riley was ejected in the third quarter for arguing that his team should receive more foul shots. "It was very frustrating," Riley said. "I didn't say anything for 2 1/2 quarters. I thought that maybe it would take care of itself, but it didn't." Miami may have struggled to get to the line but still had a chance to win the game late. "We should've still beat them," Grant said. "It doesn't matter about free throws. There are a lot of other things that we could control. We had opportunity after opportunity down the stretch." Miami guard Mike James scored all of his career-high 15 points in the second quarter. It was the highest point total for a Heat player in any quarter this season.
