Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- A new building did little to end the 
futility of the Minnesota Timberwolves in San Antonio.

Tim Duncan scored 20 points and David Robinson collected 13 and
19 rebounds as the Spurs never trailed and cruised to a 91-75
victory over the Timberwolves.

Minnesota is 6-24 all-time in San Antonio and rarely has had any
luck here, no matter what the facility.  The Timberwolves were
1-9 at HemisFair Arena and 5-14 at the Alamodome.

In their first visit to the SBC Center, the Wolves got off to a
slow start, trailing 26-18 after the first quarter and 52-31 at
halftime.

The Spurs, who missed 14 of their first 16 shots in Saturday's
loss to Portland, made 10 of their first 16 on Monday and took
their first double-digit lead at 26-16 with 2:18 remaining in
the opening quarter when Stephen Jackson drilled a 3-pointer.

"Tonight was like the other side of the coin to our Portland
game the other night," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.
"We played this game to win. We didn't play like we were owed
something. We had a couple of great efforts tonight."

Minnesota made just two of its next 14 shots after Kevin
Garnett's jumper made it 11-8. Garnett had just five points on
1-of-9 shooting in the first half, when the Wolves shot just 28
percent (11-of-39).

"The start of the game, we definitely were not in it," Minnesota
coach Flip Saunders said.  "We didn't get into a good offensive
structure and that definitely caused us some problems. We had a
lot of guys playing too much 1-on-1. We can't have that."

The Wolves got within 30-21 with 9:45 left in the second period
as Gary Trent's layup ended a drought of just over six minutes.
But San Antonio turned it into a rout with a 14-4 burst that
made it 44-25 with 3:35 to go.

Robinson capped the spurt with an emphatic slam and had 11
points at intermission.  He has five double-doubles in his first
seven games.

"I've felt real good this year," Robinson said.  "I had good
workouts this summer and I just feel good. Pop (Popovich) has
been great with minutes and getting me rest when I need it. I
just want to keep rebounding and spending quality minutes on the
floor."

"I haven't seen David that active since the MVP days," Minnesota
forward Kevin Garnett added. "He played a good game."

Duncan got off to a slow start, making just 3-of-11 shots in the
first half.  But the 7-footer got going in the third period as
he made six straight shots, helping the Spurs increase their
advantage to 70-54.

"We just try to take it game to game," Duncan said.  "They're a
tough team. We were able to hit some shots early and play some
tough D."

The Wolves got within 80-67 with 3:55 remaining on a jumper by
Rasho Nesterovic. But Tony Parker made a layup, Garnett missed a
mid-range jumper and Steve Kerr hit consecutive uncontested
3-pointers to increase the lead to 88-67 with 2:09 remaining.

"We didn't really execute and get into the flow of our game,"
Wolves center Loren Woods said.  "They really hurt us on the
inside. We made better adjustments in the second half, but we
needed to get better ball movement throughout the whole game."

Kerr scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers. A career 46
percent shooter from the arc, the 37-year-old guard is 8-of-17
from 3-point range this season.

Nesterovic led Minnesota with 16 points.  Garnett was held to 14
on 5-of-17 shooting as he was defended tightly by Duncan for
most of the night.

San Antonio is 42-17 all-time vs. Minnesota, not including a 6-2
playoff mark.
