Game StoryAUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Chucky Atkins made the most of a starting opportunity. Atkins scored 20 points in place of a suspended Chauncey Billups to lead a balanced attack as the Detroit Pistons ended the four-game winning streak of the New Orleans Hornets with a 93-87 victory. Billups was suspended for throwing a ball at an official in Saturday's loss at Dallas. Atkins, a starter last season, took advantage by making 8-of-13 shots to lead six Pistons in double figures. "I knew I was going to have to play a lot today because Chauncey was out," Atkins said. "I just wanted to relax and stay on my game. I missed a few shots early and then I got into the flow of the game." Jon Barry scored 17 points and Richard Hamilton chipped in 16 for Detroit, which was playing at home for the first time in 12 days after a five-game road trip. The Pistons got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as 11 points before rallying in the second half. "It was a great team effort," Hamilton said. "Chucky really made shots tonight and that was huge. Our defense meshed with our offense tonight and we were able to make things happen at both ends of the floor." Detroit opened the third quarter with a 21-5 run to take the lead for good. Zeljko Rebraca scored all 10 of his points during the spurt and Michael Curry's basket capped the burst for a 67-50 advantage with 1:49 left in the period. The Pistons outscored the Hornets, 24-11, in the third quarter. "When you only score 11 points in a quarter, you have to give their defense some credit," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We did rush a lot, especially around the hoop. Maybe we were looking at their shot blockers and not really finishing." Jamal Mashburn scored 17 points to lead New Orleans, which has lost the last four meetings with Detroit. Mashburn was limited to two points in the second half, thanks to tough defense by Curry. "Mash got going early, and you hate to see a scorer do that, but I stayed out of foul trouble," Curry said. "I was able to be aggressive against him and it worked." New Orleans took a 29-20 lead after one quarter and was in front 35-24 after a basket by Stacey Augmon 8:13 before halftime. Detroit used a 17-6 run to tie it and went into intermission trailing, 45-43. The trouble for the Pistons was the Hornets' zone defense, but they eventually hit enough outside shots to loosen it up. Curry nailed all three attempts from beyond the arc and Atkins also made three 3-pointers. "That's the best we've played the zone this year," Detroit coach Rick Carlisle said. "We knew we would figure it out eventually. The more we see it, the better we'll be." Baron Davis fouled out with 13 points and seven assists and Jamaal Magliore netted 12 points as all five starters scored in double figures for New Orleans. But the Hornets' defense allowed the Pistons to shoot 52.5 percent (32-of-61), a season high for an opponent.
