Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Jerome Williams started things for the Toronto Raptors and Alvin Williams helped finish off the Orlando Magic. Jerome Williams scored a career-high 30 points and Alvin Williams had 15 of his career-high 32 in the fourth quarter as the Raptors rallied for a 115-109 victory over the Magic. Toronto got 20 points from Jerome Williams in the first half, but Orlando built a 57-50 halftime lead. The Magic made it 104-90 on a three-point play by former Raptor Tracy McGrady with 6:52 remaining. Alvin Williams produced seven points in a 13-0 run that cut the deficit to one. He sank two foul shots with 2:42 left for a 107-106 lead. "We just played hard, that is basically it," Alvin Williams said. "We didn't give up. We were down double figures, so it was a total team effort." The game stayed close until Alvin Williams fed Jerome Williams for an inside hoop with 55 seconds left for a 111-109 advantage. Orlando had a chance to tie, but McGrady passed to Grant Hill, who missed an open jumper with 48 seconds left. Toronto misfired on its next possession, giving Orlando and McGrady another chance. But McGrady was double-teamed and passed to an open Pat Garrity, who misfired on a 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining. Jerome Williams sank two free throws to help seal it. "He had the ball in his hand," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "He's the one who fed Grant at the end for a wide-open shot and he's also the one who fed Pat Garrity for a wide-open shot. I think he did the exact thing that you have to do to win basketball games. Unfortunately, guys don't make shots." Toronto won despite using just nine players due to injuries to Vince Carter - a cousin of McGrady - and Antonio Davis. "We've been playing hard and we just kept pushing and playing hard on defense," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "This was a huge boost. Guys kept their heads in it and didn't get down once we were down by a number of points." Garrity's miss was one of many for Orlando from beyond the arc. The Magic made just 3-of-14 as Garrity was 2-of-6 and McGrady 1-of-5. McGrady led Orlando with 38 points but had just six in the fourth quarter. It was the second straight game in which he failed to lead the Magic down the stretch. McGrady scored just two points in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 120-117 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. A dominant third quarter by McGrady helped Orlando establish a double-digit lead. He had 19 points in the period and helped the Magic take a 91-80 lead into the fourth. But Orlando was unable to stop Toronto, which shot 50 percent (43-of-86), and surrendered more than 110 points for the fourth time this season. "We've got to take more pride on the defensive end," McGrady said. "That's what it's going to boil down to. The coaches aren't going to go out there and play defense for you. You've got to take pride on the defensive end like you do on the offensive end." Jerome Williams made 13-of-18 shots and Alvin Williams was 9-of-18 while sinking all 12 free throws. "It was just one of those things that my teammates found me early and got me some easy looks at the basket," Jerome Williams said. "We have to give credit to the defense in the fourth quarter." "Jerome Williams was awesome tonight," Rivers said. "Jerome Williams, no disrespect, scoring 30 points off effort, bothers me." Morris Peterson collected 23 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for Toronto, which dominated the glass for a 49-35 advantage. Jerome Williams and Greg Foster each added eight boards. Hill finished with 21 points and Shawn Kemp fouled out with 11 for Orlando, which shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80) and made 88 percent (30-of-34) of its free throws.
