Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ron Artest is earning his money. Artest scored 22 points and Brad Miller added 15 and 12 rebounds as the Pacers extended their best start in more than 30 years with a 95-75 rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Pacers signed Artest to a multi-year contract extension on October 31 and the fourth-year swingman has lived up to the commitment. He is averaging 20 points and 6.1 rebounds in five games since being re-signed and had his most efficient performance of the season against Cleveland. Artest made 9-of-10 shots from the floor, including 2-of-2 3-pointers, and his only two free-throw attempts. He also collected four rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. "It wasn't as easy as it looked," Artest said. "I'm just going to try and do whatever it takes to win. It's like a dream for me to be able to play on a team like this." "We thought even when we got him last year that he could score the basketball," Indiana coach Isiah Thomas said. "We try to put him in a position where he has an advantage offensively. He can post up, he can shoot the three." The Pacers have won six of their first seven games for the first time since joining the NBA in 1976. It is their best start since going 6-1 to start the 1970-71 season, when they were in the American Basketball Association. "I really think keeping our focus is one of the keys to our early success," Miller said. "This is the type of team that I think will come out and play hard night in and night out. We are having fun with the winning, and I think we've all gained a lot of confidence in each other." Indiana had a 37-33 lead late in the second quarter before scoring 11 of the next 12 points. Artest sparked the burst with a jumper and made consecutive layups before Miller buried a hook shot. Jamaal Tinsley, who dished out eight assists, capped the run with a 3-pointer for a 48-34 cushion with 67 seconds left before halftime. Cleveland got no closer than 10 points in the second half and stumbled to its fourth straight loss. "They really kept coming at us," Cleveland coach John Lucas said. "We're so young right now and in a tough stretch of games. The Pacers' defense is impressive." Jermaine O'Neal had 15 points and eight rebounds and Ron Mercer also scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the Pacers, who shot 51 percent (39-of-76) from the floor and held a 46-40 rebounding advantage. Darius Miles scored 19 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 17 for the Cavs, who shot just 31 percent (26-of-83) from the floor. "(The defense) is our constant," Thomas said. "Offense will come and go. Our defensive execution has been great. Our players are defending, sticking to the thing we want them to do." "We were bad today, we played bad," Ilgauskas said. "Nothing seemed to go right. They got an early lead and we kept missing shots. They are a very tough team to play against." Ricky Davis, who was leading Cleveland in scoring with 23.6 points per game, had just two points and played six minutes following a disagreement with Lucas. Cleveland never led after making the game's first basket and Indiana went ahead for good with a 14-4 run midway through the first quarter. O'Neal scored six points and buried a jumper with 2:42 left to make it 20-10. The Pacers had a 35-25 cushion with 8:27 left in the second quarter. But Bimbo Coles scored three points during an 8-2 run as the Cavs pulled within 37-33 at 3:52.
