Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- P.J. Brown may be an unheralded player on the New Orleans Hornets, but he came up with some invaluable contributions. Brown had two clutch free throws and a key rebound in the final two minutes and helped contain Kevin Garnett throughout the game as the Hornets rallied from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 102-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Garnett finished with 16 points but had just three in the fourth quarter. One of the top defenders in the NBA, Brown used his 6-11 frame to hamper the 7-footer and also added 11 points and nine rebounds. "Kevin is such a good player, I just wanted to keep in front of him and not let him get the inside shot," Brown said. "We just had to keep slugging and let them make the mistakes." The Hornets used an 18-3 run to take the lead for good late in the game. Brown's two free throws gave New Orleans a 96-94 edge with 1:47 left and Stacey Augmon's pair capped the surge for a four-point cushion. "You don't get many chances like that, so I try to just try to make them good whenever I can," Brown said. "I want to be a guy, if called upon and needed, to get the job done, whether it's a free throw or a rebound." While New Orleans was making plays down the stretch, Minnesota was not. Garnett missed a pair of free throws with 1:27 left to go that would have tied the game. Rod Strickland inexplicably crashed into Augmon 30 feet from the basket on the Hornets' next possession, leading to Augmon's foul shots. "I don't feel like I made any plays coming down in the fourth quarter," Garnett said. "I missed some crucial free throws. I'll take this one. I know a lot of responsibility falls on me, and I'll take that. I've got to make the shots." "This is the first time we had some of the guys playing together and we're still searching for what we could use," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We played well for most of the game. But then in the fourth quarter, we couldn't make plays or make shots." Strickland's reverse layup cut the deficit to two points, and Baron Davis misfired badly on a 3-pointer. But Brown hustled down the rebound and fed Courtney Alexander, who sank two free throws for a 100-96 cushion with 27 seconds to go. "We were just searching for a combination that could work," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We tried everything. We hit on one by putting Mash (Jamal Mashburn) at the 4 (power forward), Courtney came through for us, P.J. at the 5 (center). It just worked out very well. We just never say die." The Hornets improved to 5-0 in New Orleans, matching the best home start in franchise history. Minnesota is 0-4 on the road this season. A basket by Strickland gave Minnesota a 91-80 lead with 7:41 remaining before New Orleans made its decisive run. Alexander sank six free throws to help cut the deficit to 93-91 and, after a free throw by Wally Szczerbiak, Alexander drilled a 3-pointer to tie it. "Courtney was a big key," Silas said. "He went to the line and made 10 free throws and 23 points, his high for us. So you have to give him a lot of credit for this one." Jamal Mashburn scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead New Orleans. Alexander chipped in 23 points and made all eight free throws in the fourth quarter. "I had been thinking about it all day that I needed to be a little more aggressive, to be that spark," Alexander said. "Tonight we needed it and I tried to provide it. My teammates did a good job of getting me the ball and I found the rhythm." Strickland came off the bench with 16 points and Troy Hudson added 14 for Minnesota. Szczerbiak added 13, but Garnett was just 6-of-15 from the floor and 4-of-8 from the line. David finished with 15 points and 10 assists despite 5-of-16 shooting. New Orleans connected on 22-of-25 free throws, led by Alexander.
