Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- The New Orleans Hornets continue to enjoy their new home. David Wesley and Baron Davis each scored 22 points as the Hornets remained unbeaten at New Orleans Arena with a 105-87 victory over the Chicago Bulls. The Hornets, who relocated from Charlotte, are off to the first 6-0 home start in franchise history. Two seasons ago, they won their first five home contests. "It's always fun to have these blowouts," Wesley said. "Everybody gets to play and you get to sit back and enjoy winning big. You know you aren't going to have these every night." Chicago, which has lost six of seven overall and four straight on the road, led 52-49 at halftime. But the Hornets took control by outscoring the Bulls, 34-14, in the third quarter. Wesley and Davis had 10 points apiece in the period. Jalen Rose scored 23 points for the Bulls, who have dropped nine straight on the road to the Hornets' franchise. "Turnovers in the third quarter really hurt," Chicago coach Bill Cartwright said. "We had our opportunities and just missed the shots and the opportunities we had. I'm disappointed. We came out and did a good job for the first half but didn't go past that." New Orleans erased a 54-49 deficit with an 11-0 spurt early in the third quarter. After the Bulls closed to 62-60, the Hornets ended the period with a 21-6 burst to take an 83-66 cushion into the fourth quarter. The Bulls committed eight turnovers in the third quarter and shot just 23.5 percent from the field (5-of-17). "We couldn't match their intensity in the second half," Rose said. "We are not playing four quarters as a team. We are a young team and don't have the focus of an older team." Jamal Mashburn added 16 points for the Hornets, who shot 50 percent or better from the field for the first time this season. They finished at 51 percent (42-of-83). "I liked a lot of the things we did tonight," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We (won) just about every category in the second half. First half, we really weren't in the game." Davis also handed out 12 assists for his third double-double of the season. "Most definitely, this is my team," Davis said. "I'm the starting point guard. I have to be the one that gets everyone going. It's the same situation as last year. People look to me for motivation." The Hornets avenged an 84-79 loss to the Bulls in Chicago on November 1. "We brought a lot more energy this time," Davis said. "We waited until the fourth quarter up there to turn our defense up and get ourselves back in the game. I think the second half (in Friday's game) we got our defense going and we were able to put a stamp on them." Robert Traylor added 10 points off the bench for the Hornets, who made 8-of-16 3-pointers while holding the Bulls to just 2-of-6 from beyond the arc. "I let them know at halftime that we did not have one fastbreak," Silas said. "We really weren't playing to our abilities. We weren't moving the ball. We weren't running. We weren't hustling." The Hornets were a different team in the third quarter, making 13-of-21 shots (62 percent) and turning the ball over just twice. They also had a 10-0 advantage in fast-break points in the period. "I am sure coach Silas had an X-rated speech for his team at halftime," Rose said. The Bulls led by as many as six in the first half, taking a 50-44 lead on Tyson Chandler's jumper with 1:12 left in the second quarter.
