Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Ray Allen and the Milwaukee Bucks finally got a strong defensive effort. Allen poured in 31 points and Sam Cassell added 25 as the Bucks used a big second half to post a 104-85 victory over the Boston Celtics. Milwaukee had allowed over 100 points in four straight games before limiting Boston on Saturday. Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce each scored 28 points for the Celtics but were held in check down the stretch. Allen helped keep Pierce quiet and Anthony Mason did the job on Walker in the second half. The duo combined for 20 of Boston's 32 points in the second half. "Boston is a team we have played a lot like the last few games," Allen said. "You can't let them get open looks because they have good shooters. Walker had it going early, but Mase (Anthony Mason) did a great job defensively in the second half on him." Allen also had an outstanding game on offense, particularly from the 3-point line. Allen drained 7-of-13 attempts from beyond the arc as Milwaukee made 11-of-27. "When Ray shoots an open 3, it has a good chance of going in," Bucks coach George Karl said. "He was a big lift for our club today." Walker nailed a jumper with just over five minutes left in the third quarter to forge a 67-67 tie. Four different Bucks scored in an 11-4 run and Michael Redd's short jumper gave Milwaukee a 78-71 lead entering the final period. Redd scored off a feed from Toni Kukoc, who added a 3-pointer as Milwaukee opened an 83-71 lead with 11 minutes to go. The Bucks continued to stretch the margin and led by as many as 22 points. "We really got hurt from the 3-point line, they shot the ball well," Celtics coach Jim O'Brien said. "Ray Allen was outstanding." The Celtics are normally the team that is known for firing away and did so on Saturday but made just 8-of-28 attempts from the arc. Pierce and Walker combined to make 3-of-12. Besides the defense of Allen and Mason, Milwaukee also got a huge boost from rookie center Dan Gadzuric. The Dutch native had eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks. "He's come in and played with the energy we need," Karl said. "We don't run plays for him, but he runs, jumps and defends. He will get better defensively, but for a rookie he is playing very well for us." Tim Thomas finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the Bucks held a 46-39 edge on the glass. Kukoc added 11 points and four assists off the bench. No Boston player besides Pierce and Walker scored in double figures. Tony Delk made 2-of-8 shots for five points and Shammond Williams came off the bench to miss all six shots. "I think we didn't play team ball tonight," Pierce said. "We turned the ball over too much, we had more turnovers (19) than assists (15). When you do that, especially on the road, you make it tough for yourself to win." Cassell made all 11 foul shots as the Bucks sank 21-of-24 from the line. Milwaukee has won seven straight home meetings with Boston.
