Game Story

NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- After Jamal Mashburn finally missed a 
shot, David Wesley finally made one.

Wesley rebounded Mashburn's miss and flipped in a basket at the
buzzer, giving the New Orleans Hornets a wild 99-98 victory over
the Philadelphia 76ers, who had a three-game winning streak
snapped.

The Hornets had blown a 22-point first-quarter lead and trailed,
98-97, when Eric Snow made a foul-line jumper with 48 seconds
left.  Wesley missed a jumper on the next possession - his
seventh straight miss - but the Hornets got a reprieve when
Allen Iverson missed a 22-footer.

New Orleans inbounded with 5.2 seconds left to Mashburn, who
scored a season-high 37 points on 15-of-24 shooting, most of
them on turnaround jumpers.  He went to the same move again but
missed the shot.

"I always tell them that last-second shots don't beat you very
often, but second shots beat you," 76ers coach Larry Brown said.

The ball hit the front of the rim and skipped right through the
hands of Snow to Wesley, whose push shot easily beat the buzzer
and touched off a celebration at New Orleans Arena, where the
Hornets improved to 7-0.

"I think everybody on the floor was in the paint," said Wesley,
who made 3-of-10 shots.  "It was kind of a scramble.  The ball
got tipped around and it ended up in my hands and I shot it.
For having such a crappy game, it's the best I've felt in a long
time."

"It hit my shoulder and went right through me," Snow said.  "We
got Mashburn to finally miss, but they got the rebound and put
it in.  I was real close.  If it bounced anywhere else, time
runs out."

Even though the referees consulted replay, Iverson knew his team
had lost.

"When the ball went in, I didn't even need to see a replay," he
said.  "I knew the shot was legit.  I'd rather lose by 30 than
lose like this."

P.J. Brown had 15 points and 16 rebounds and Jamaal Magloire
added 11 and career highs of 17 boards and seven blocks for the
Hornets, who held a 50-34 advantage on the glass.

Iverson scored a season-high 38 points, his eighth straight
30-plus game against the Hornets.  Philadelphia was playing in
New Orleans for the first time since January 12, 1979.

There were 12 lead changes in the fourth quarter.  After a
jumper by Iverson gave the Sixers an 84-83 edge with 7:13 to go,
Mashburn responded with a fadeaway shot and a turnaround jumper
around a basket by Baron Davis for an 89-84 bulge with 5:21
left.

"I just tried to keep (Mashburn) in front of me," Philadelphia's
Aaron McKie said.  "But he was making the tough shots.  We
thought about double-teaming him, but then we just tried to get
him out of his rhythm."

With the Sixers double-teaming Mashburn, P.J. Brown stepped
forward on offense.  He scored eight straight New Orleans
points, countering a basket by Philadelphia each time.  His
tip-in with 1:18 remaining gave the Hornets a 97-96 edge.

"They were either going to double Mash and leave the lanes open
where I can get tip-ins and rebounds or a jump shot, or they are
going to have to stay 1-on-1 and let Mash take advantage of the
smaller guy," Brown said.  "They chose to take Mash and let me
do what I had to do."

A wild scramble led to a jump ball that Derrick Coleman won from
Wesley, leading to Snow's jumper.

Davis had 21 points and eight assists despite foul trouble for
the Hornets, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82), cooling off
considerably after a torrid first quarter.

McKie scored 18 points, Keith Van Horn added 11 and Snow 10 with
nine assists for the Sixers, who shot 47 percent (41-of-87) and
committed just seven turnovers.  Making his season debut,
Coleman scored nine points in 17 minutes.

"Games like this should make you stronger," Snow said.  "It
should make you realize that the game's not over until it's
over."

Mashburn scored 14 points in the first period, when New Orleans
shot 71 percent (15-of-21).  A layup by Davis made it 36-14 with
1:43 left before Philadelphia closed to 38-19 at the horn.

"We were trying to stay in the game and we were playing as hard
as we could, but everything was going right for them and
everything was going wrong for us," Iverson said.  "We couldn't
do anything about it."

But Iverson scored nine points in a 12-2 surge that opened the
second quarter and made a 3-pointer that triggered a 7-0 burst
that cut the deficit to 45-42 with 5:36 left.  The Sixers
trailed 56-49 at halftime and pulled within 75-72 after three
quarters.
