Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Troy Hudson scored 20 points and reserve Marc Jackson added a surprising 18 as the Minnesota Timberwolves continued their mastery of the Atlanta Hawks with a 103-93 victory. Superstar Kevin Garnett contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds to record his league-leading 11th double-double of the season and help the Timberwolves push their winning streak against the Hawks to six games. Hudson scored 12 points in the opening quarter. Anthony Peeler and Jackson chipped in 11 and nine, respectively, off the bench as Minnesota opened a commanding 59-36 halftime lead. "That was the turning point of the game," Jackson said of the second quarter, when the Timberwolves outscored the Hawks, 33-12. "We just held together and got the victory." The Timberwolves' reserves outscored their Hawks counterparts, 49-10. Atlanta's Glenn Robinson scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 2:59 left to pull the Hawks within 94-87. "They made a great run on us in the second quarter," Robinson said. "It was difficult for us to recover from." But Jackson, who did not play at all for the third time this season in Tuesday's overtime victory over Memphis, scored eight points in the final 12 minutes. That helped the injury-depleted Timberwolves post back-to-back road wins after starting the season 0-4 away from Target Center. "When you play back-to-back, you want to come out with energy," Hudson said. "We came out with energy and knocked some shots down. The bench put us up by 23, that was big. That's what you need to be a great team. Those guys won the game for us." Jackson was acquired from Golden State at last season's trading deadline to add frontcourt depth but has done very little since his arrival. He averaged just 4.6 points in 22 games following the trade and had just 30 points in nine games this season. "Marc stepped up," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "I didn't play him last night. He was sweating and working hard before the game. The gut said, 'Go with him.' So I gave him an opportunity and he produced. He showed some of the things he can do." The Timberwolves scored the first eight points of the pivotal second period. Garnett sparked the burst with a pair of free throws and capped it with a driving layup with 7:38 to play in the half, giving Minnesota a 34-24 lead. "They were more aggressive, especially in the second quarter when they made their run," Hawks coach Lon Kruger said. "They were much more aggressive in attacking and we got on our heels a little bit." Jackson put home a pair of dunks as the Timberwolves outscored the Hawks, 16-3, during a three-minute stretch. Backup point guard Rod Strickland finished the run, converting a layup with 2:23 left as Minnesota opened a 52-30 cushion. "I thought we had very good guard play tonight between Troy and Strickland," Saunders said. "The bench had an opportunity and they produced. It was a good character-type game. We came in with focus and played well defensively."
