Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Ron Artest is wondering what the big problem is with guarding Tracy McGrady. Artest scored 15 points and helped hold McGrady to a season-low 13 as the Indiana Pacers won their franchise-record ninth straight game wih a 106-70 rout of the Orlando Magic. The NBA's leading scorer, McGrady came in averaging 33.2 points per game, having scored at least 30 points in the last seven games. Hounded by Artest, the superstar missed his first four shots and hit just 6-of-19 from the field. Artest, who is recognized as one of the NBA's best defenders, connected on 6-of-16 shots and collected three steals in just 23 minutes. "T-Mac is a great player and I respect his game," Artest said. "That's probably why I had success against him tonight, because I respect him so much." "Defensively, that's been our thing all season," said Pacers coach Isiah Thomas, whose team has started 10-1 for the first time in franchise history. "We want to be solid and contest every shot. With McGrady you hope to catch him on an off night and fortunately tonight was an off night." Brad Miller chipped in 13 points and pulled down nine rebounds while Ron Mercer, who also guarded McGrady when Artest got into early foul trouble, added 11 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Artest's lead on defense sparked a team effort that featured a season-high 14 steals and nine blocked shots. Orlando looked like a team on the last leg of a six-game road trip, scoring a franchise-low 29 points in the first half that started with 11 missed shots. "I think as a team we are very athletic," Artest added. "We have a lot of players that can play so many positions and we can keep throwing people at them throughout the game." The Pacers led by as many as 39 points in the second half. They also struggled early, missing their first five shots, but rebounded by draining their next nine to open a 20-6 lead. "It's nice to get some rest for the starters," said Jermaine O'Neal who watched from the bench as all 12 Pacers logged at least 10 minutes. "It really sets the tone. Other teams watch the scores, they see that McGrady was held to a season low and they got beat by 36." O'Neal finished with nine points and seven rebounds in 26 minutes. The Magic had their worst offensive output of the season and made just 1-of-10 from 3-point range. They went 2-4 on their trip. "It's tough falling behind by so many points early, but you have to give them a lot of credit," Magic swingman Mike Miller said. "I wish we had given a better effort, but there's nothing we can do about it now except put it behind us and move on." "No one had anything tonight and that was due to Indiana," Magic coach Doc Rivers said. "There was no doubt that we were tired, but they beat us fair and sqaure." Orlando forward Grant Hill dressed but did not play due to soreness in the left ankle that has plagued him the last two-plus seasons. After scoring at least 100 points in nine of the first 12 games with Hill in the lineup, the Magic have scored under 85 in the last two games without him. Jacque Vaughn carried the offensive load for Orlando with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Austin Croshere saw his first action of the season for Indiana after recovering from a broken foot, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 boards in 21 minutes.
